1G 1G 7 bolt Rear main seal question inside. *Pics*

I've got a 1st gen 7 bolt block. I'm putting the rear main seal back on. Question is: "Is there a gasket that goes there or just rtv silicon to keep the rear main seal housing on the block?"

I cant seem to find an answer in Haynes or Chiltons and the dealership told me yes I needed a gasket then sold me the wrong one.

Any takers on this?

That looks like a gasket for a 6 bolt. There is indeed a gasket that goes there, you just have the wrong one .
I'm not too sure about the 7 bolts (they may not have the hole), but when I put together my 6 bolt motors I always make sure to have that small hole on the circular retaining clip pointing straight down. You may want to check that out before you put it in.

Yeah, I think they must have given me a 6 bolt gasket too. What is this circular clip you're referring to? I dont have that.

Ok. I'm sure a gasket goes there now. Just called "satan" and told them that they jacked me over. I'll post reference pics when I get the right one today.

OK, I just got back from satans (I gotta stop calling them that since they give me a 20% discount) and turns out that the part is indeed secured with rtv only.

There you go. Maybe this will help somebody else one day. I'm outty.

I find it hard to believe that theres no gasket there for the 7 bolt motors, never built one though so I couldn't tell you. Either way, there is retaining ring that holds the seal in place, there is a small hole that should be pointed straight down. You can just pop it out, rotate it and push it back down in place.

Believe it! I saw it for myself right there at the dealership on CAPS. It even shows a picture of the rtv with the Mitsu part number. The equivalent is Permatex Ultra Grey... the same stuff used on the oil pan.

As for this small hole all that I have is what you see in the pictures above. I guess you are referring to that arrow shaped groove at the bottom.

There is a metal oil ring( not there in your pics) that goes in the seal and it needs to point down toward the oil pan. If it's not there i belive it might pop the seal.

Thats only on the 6 bolts, not the 7 bolts.

Nice of you to revive the thread...Most people call them satan b/c charge way too much for stuff and some of the dealerships are filled with complete assholes. Some have had problems with them not doing recalls and such.

Not to mention that if you have a problem with your modded car they will act like tools and most likely blame your mods for whatever the problem is no matter what the mod is.

(Example) The reason your car wont start is because of that fancy upper intercooler pipe you got.

Just for future reference............

When doing a rear crank seal on a 7-bolt (2G at least), you DO NOT have to remove the above mentioned seal "housing". Just get a small screw driver or pick and remove the seal. There is NO retaining clip associated with the seal.

The new one just "presses" back in place. If you have it off, you can use one of the water pump pulleys (IIRC the smaller one) to "press" the new seal in place.
