I finished assembling my engine this weekend, got the engine back in the car, everythings bolted up and I was looking through a box that had my thermostat housing gaskets in it and found the metal ring that is supposed to go on the inside of the main seal. When I installed the seal, I used RTV sealand instead of the gasket they gave me, and I know its sealed ok that way, but now I'm worried about it leaking out the seal and into the flywheel and clutch.
I'd rather not pull the engine and tranny again, but I will if I have too... should I pull it and install that clip? What exactly does it do?

I don't recall the rear crank seal having any metal to it, and not any that hold it in. Of course it has been a couple of months now. From what I remember the outer portion of the seal is plastic. The old one just come out and new one presses in with no retainer or shell.

The only thing I can think of with a clip would be the throw out bearing, if that is the case, then YES the clip needs to go on.

More info needed for a better answer from me.
