I am going to be looking in the salvage yards this weekend for a complete 4g63 for a 95 AWD TSI Talon. From what I have read and been told, the 6 bolt is the way to go from a 97-98. Is this correct? If so, is there a way to tell if I am looking at a 6 bolt without pulling the pan? What cars should I be looking at that will have a 4g63 6 bolt?
My goal is to build a 400whp driver and I want to ensure I pick the right parts first time out.

You should get the 6 bolt block put in arp everything and use your 2g pistons on the 1g rods. This wouldn't be as expensive and would meet your hp goal.

I was planning on using a set of K1 rods and JE pistons.
So the stock 2g pistons and 1g rods will support this reliably?
What cars should I be looking for to find a 6 bolt block?

any dsm years 90-91 have the 6 bolt, sometime in mid 91 though they stopped making them and make the 7 bolts.

All 2g came with a 7 bolt block, 97-99 had the better designed split thrust bearing. But all properly maintained 7 bolts could hold that kind of power.

So is it a better idea to go with the 97-99 motor? Its going in a 95 AWD talon. Will it swap straight across or is there parts that need to be mixed and matched to make it work? I'm new to the DSM so please bare with my questions.
