To answer your question, though. I've put in the block with the tranny still in the car before, and then I put the head on. It is a tight fit and you'll have to have all the timing components off and the waterpump off too. It's just really tight trying to get the block in and trying to angle it so that you get the flywheel inside the bell housing and all. It sucks, my dad and I did it ourselves (i'm 26 and he's 50). The block is heavy...just guessing around 350ish. I'll never do it again like that though. I have to pull my engine this summer and you bet i'm going to find a way to get ahold of a hoist.
