4G63 evo 8 crank vs dsm 7bolt crank

hey guys

i have a question

im building my block ( winter project ) and i need to buy new used crank.

and i dont know which crank to get evo 8 / stock 7bolt

i was looking for stock 7bolt crank but then i found some evo 8 cranks

ok so now my guestion

what is the good and bad thing if i would go with evo 8 crank ?

i know that the stock eclipse 4g63 7bolt crank weights 35lbs
and evo 8 crank is Lighter , weights 30lbs

i was under the impression that a 7 bolt crank was a 7 bolt crank? there was no difference.? i am also interested in hearing what the differences are.

yeah 7 bolt crank is a 7 bolt crank but the evo cranks are 5lbs Lighter

stock 7bolt 35lbs
stock evo 8 30lbs

so what is the good and bad thing having lighter evo 8 crank in eclipse ?

well it would have less rotational mass meaning a faster rev. and a possibility of high revving if its all balanced.
it'll be like having a light weight flywheel, to an extent.

Who told you that a EVO8 crank will work in a 2g block? They are still called "4G63"'s but there are differences. The big one being the trans bolts to the oposite side of the block, As far as I know the only pieces that will work are the rods/pistons in a 2g 7bolt.

it wouldn't matter if the engine is 180* out, because the crank goes 180* out with the engine...so it will still bolt up to the trans.. unless I'm wrong?

i thought i was.

the good thing will be the 5 lbs lost and the bad would be... well i can't think of a bad thing about using one. I'm sure it will hold up to power you may be looking for. so if it really is 5 lbs lighter then our cranks, i would say its just better then ours. so you would be better off using the evo crank.

I have'nt personal inspected an EVO8 motor but i'm sure there are differences between it and the late model 2g 7bolt. Since your even going to have to flip it around and possibly spin it in the opposite direction which may cuase oil flow issues.

evo guys use the 4g64 crank(100mm 7 bolt crank)...and we use 4g64 cranks as well..so if the 4g64 crank fits in their blocks and the 4g64 crank fits in our block that means their cranks will also fit in our blocks..

the main difference is the split thrust bearing, which isn't a problem at all.

6bolt crank WONT fit in 7bolt block for sure.

evos crank are only 7bolt and evos crank will fit in 7bolt block 95-99 dsm

it wont fit in 6bolt block

also 92.5-99 7 bolt blocks. but you should just get the evo crank if you can and some evo pistons and rods and that should make for a great street car. just my .02.

i would try to find one on the evo forums. or you can try ebay, or craigslist. good luck either way.

Both engines spin the same direction. The evo block is just mounted opposite. I have compared both side to side, they interchange. Most aftermarket cranks for a 7-bolt dsm, and evo are the same part.

I have a knife edged evolution 9 94 NM crank in my build it works just fine. If your going to knife edge a crank use your stock one the machine shop will just be shaving off the additional weight why spend extra getting an evolution crank unless u don't already have one
