420a Turbo at 180k opinions

I'm new here and looking for opinions or thoughts. I found a complete turbonetics setup for $500. Comes with everything except the oil pan fitting for the return line. I would like to say I plan on buying it whether iit gets installed now or just sits in my garage until I get the motor rebuilt.

So I have a 5 speed 420a with 174k miles. Compression is about 120 to 150 bone cold motor gas pedal not depressed depending on how many times I turn over the motor.

Think its safe to throw the kit on at real low boost. Like 5lbs or so??

I dont use the car as a DD and have 2 other vehicles that I can and do drive. I plan on picking up a built short block and rebuilding the motor in a year or so. Has anyone ever put a turbo on a 420a at this high of mileage?? Basically I want to get a year or about 3k miles at most out of this motor. I pretty much baby the car and it rarely goes above 3500 RPM. I figure taking it easy with low boost will make it last a little longer.

My question is why did you do an improper compression test and bother posting the results?

A proper test is done on a operating temp motor, with the throttle wide open, and turned over until the gauge stops moving with the ECU fuse pulled.

Throw the kit on, push 8lbs, and if the motor blow's you have other DD's and plan to rebuild anyway, so why not have some fun until then?

Keep the 420a. Throw a few pounds on it. Don't listen to the people trying to make you sell your car, they have tiny dicks and took the "easy" route. When it comes time for a rebuild, don't be stupid, build the bottom end for boost. Boost away.

When it's all said and done you will have a the same amount of power for the same price they paid.

it will blow up man. Mine blew up at 190xxx and i babied my car. if your going to turbo it might as well buy a new engine that will hold up or rebuild it.

Bottom line, the guy has this car for fun, with two other reliable means of transportation.

Mike, you have a couple of options. First, you buy the kit, throw it on and run 5 to 8lbs. It's going to be fun for a while, but you're going to want more. If this is what you want to do it will probably work for the time frame you said you expected (a year to 3k miles).

Second, you can buy the kit, put it on standby while you look into rebuilding the bottom end. In the long run this is the more sound decision. You're going to be able to run higher boost, and have a freshly built motor that is going to last for several years down the road (given the assumption you take care of it and maintain it properly).

In the long run, and honestly, I think you should step back and look at what you want out of this car and the overall goals for it. This will help you determine how and where to get started. You will regret hasty decisions 3 or 4 years from now if you don't step back and look at what you want out of it now.

Boost It, Why not. Its not your DD, and to make it actually worth anything boost wise, youll need to invest far more then 500$. So if you want to invest, boost it, till it blows then invest.

I wouldn't take advice from half of these people... Most of them blew because they didnt know what they were doing...

My 98 gs has 196k and i didn't think twice about boosting it before a rebuild! Rebuild first then boost it, you'll be happy you did!

I say if you want to boost it, then boost it if nothing else it will give you a reason for a rebuild when it blows. Or you may get lucky and it will run 300k miles on 5psi before it blows, you never know. Since you said you wanted to boost it and you wanted to rebuild eventually just boost it now the kit should still be fine either way if the motor does blow. So what would you be out?

I gotta go with glow on this one, its not your dd so slap that turbo on. Then you can get all the kinks out, after all it sounds like your first turbo install, better to screw something up on a block you dont care that much about. The only problem I see is this...

I'm thinking that they are leaving out some stuff, mostly the fuel stuff... fcd, fmu, fuel pump and probably all the intercooler stuff but thats still a good deal. This will let you know what you need...

Also I would have to agree with Glow that a lot of these posts are spreading bad info. Swapping a 4g into a 420a chassis? lookin at you hyper. I don't like to throw my thoughts in on the 420a vrs 4g63 argument that plagues these forums... Its your car, money and life do what you want.

Boost it! its all in how much you know, how good the tune is etc. And if it blows thats a reason to go bigger.

If your like me. Stop giving a #### what others think. Slap that kit on (Do it correctly) Boost to cloud 7, watch them hate. If your still like me you got another ride If it blows theres ALWAYS another 420a sitting around somewhere... and then you can push the limits again. Its all about having fun bro

talking .57 trim t3/t4 hybrid.

Thats sweet then. A couple things I would check is how much end play the turbo has and then I would use that list in the link I sent to compare and make sure you have everything. Good luck on the install.

To the OP, boost it, throw 8lbs at it and be happy untill your ready to take it down and rebuild it. Just make sure you have the proper fuel setup, and a wideband to make sure your not running to lean or drowning in fuel. and have fun.

I would never boost a n/t motor with that many miles. Yet alone one with evident problems such as compression between cylinders being out of spec. Which means its not ok to run it as is, yet alone boosted.

The mileage means practically nothing. The OP should do a proper compression test to determine the condition the of motor and go from there.

you eveidently didnt see that the compression test was done cold with the throttle closed did you. so the compression figures he posted mean nothing.

and milage on the motor means nothing as long as it's healthy.

Mileage means nothing??? Wow, i didnt even think that point was arguable. Plus the throttle being closed will give lower numbers but i dont believe it will cause a difference between cylinders, only an overall lower score. So raise it 20 points its still 140-170. Still out of spec...The motor is scrap, he would be stupid to boost it in its current condition. Especially with 5lbs like some are talking. It would make what like 160hp. You guys are ridiculous.
