One day while driving about 35 mph, my speedometer just stopped. I recentely, today, replaced the plastic black gear that is actually inside of my transmission. I also replaced the speed sensor, tested it by hooking up a drill to But, when i go to test drive it, it doesnt work? the wiring is good..the guage cluster is good.. and the sensor and gear are good.
So im confused on what it could be ive been looking around and cannot find anything about changing anything else! Has anyone had this problem too? I need help because im seriously about to give up on these problems.

I had the same issue with a dodge neon which is the same transmission, but luckily mine was under warranty the dealership told me there was a plastic drive gear in the transmission that drives the speed sensor, and this gear was broken. It was not an easy fix the transmission had to be removed and the case split to do so. If you look at the shop manual that is provided on this website you can probably find what you are looking for.

Thats actually what i replaced yesterday. Thats why im so confused becuase i have no clue what else it could be! And i didnt have to take my trans out, i found a secret way to get the plastic gear out, and in :sneaky:

There are 2 plastic gears that drive the speedo. One is the plastic gear on the end of the speed sensor. The other gear is attached to the differential which drives the speedo. You should be able to shine a light inside the speedo hole and see the gear and determine if it is damaged or not.

Here is a pic of the gear. http://www.jr-ms.com/images/dif2.2.jpg

Yes i believe thats it. I had to order the first plastic gear from a dealer so i would have to do the same for this. Whats the gear on the differential called?

No idea what its called. The dealer should be able to look it up. You have to split the transmission open to change that gear. I would try to check it first before pulling the trans

Okay, and does the trans split by un-doing some bolts or does it need to be cut or something? I have the tools and lifts just want to know what im getting into before i do anything.

There are many bolts that go around the entire body of the transmission to attach the bellhousing to the gear case. Take them all apart and pull the differential out, the speedo ring gear will be clipped onto that. Usually its not damaged but has come unclipped from the differential ring gear. Either way, odds are it came off once it will come off again just from age and being stretched, just replace it.
There is some controversy about what should be used to seal it back up when you are done, there is an aneraboic sealer for transmission halves to be sealed but some just use RTV, I would recommend the anaerobic.

I can have mine out in about 4 hrs. I have also done it too many times to count. If you have never taken one out before I would plan on spending a whole weekend to do this job.

Well ive taken trans. out of other cars, just not my eclipse yet. Never needed to. And that doesnt sound too bad. I was also reading somewhere and it said the engine also needs to come out in order to get the trans. out. Is that true or does it just de-tatch?

You can pull the trans out separate. Its a pain to find enough room to work it out but its do able. If you have taken transmissions out before then it shouldnt be a problem.
