Hi Everyone,

I'm brand new to this forum and front wheel drive cars. I bought a 95 Talon 2.0 non turbo 5 speed. I never drove it on the road and it's now gutted with a cage. So I can only drive it on the track. I'm racing enduros and I am having a huge problem shifting it. At low speeds/ rpm's I can shift 1st, 2nd and 3rd. without any difficulty but as soon as I get up in the rpm's I can't get it into any gears at all. I need third gear on the track because in second I'm bouching off of the rev limiter. I'm getting mixed answers between the clutch and transmission from people but I feel you guys would be able to help me more since you all own and work on these cars.

Thanks, Bob

The first thing I would do is inspect the connections on the shifter cables - both in the cabin and on the bellhousing. Being sure they are secure and not flopping around is a good place to start. Aside from that, I would check the fluid level in the clutch reservoir. Be sure you have enough in there. It couldn't hurt to bleed the clutch, either.

I guess I would just start with a good once-over, checking cables, hydraulic lines, cylinders, etc.. If that's all good, it might be time for a new clutch or throw out bearing, imo. These trannies are fairly stout.

Funny you should say mounts, I changed the drivers mount and the metal bracket beneath it. I also repaired the rear bracket that's sort of below the shifter cables. I removed the console and checked the shifter cables. There's no slop in either cable. There is some movement in the cable bracket at the tranny But upon removal I realized that it's rubber mounted. So that's okay. The slave cylinder has approximatly 1 inch of travel. So I doubt it's hydraulic. I'm guessing a cluutch issue. It barely goes in any gear whether it be up shifting or down shifting.

Thanks, Bob

Well since your on the racetrack, a new clutch couldn't hurt,

Check out

Spec or Southbend clutches, both have great torque capcity.

And replacing the rubber shifter bushings with the symbroski shift kit and a B&M shortshifter couldn't do you any harm as well.

Definately make sure there is dealership trans=axle fluid in the tranny as well.

I changed the clutch and throw out bearing with an OEM replacement and the car shifts though the gears without any problems. But now I've found a new problem, It pops out of third gear? The car is new to me and only track driven so I'm finding out all of it's problems as I go. Any solutions to the poping out of third gear would be appreciated.

Thanks, Bob
