-I have been searching all over the internet for the right price for a decent engine overhaul kit for my 99' Gs. I am looking to purchase a kit including pistons, rings, gasket sets, and valve seals, etc. while spending within a $300 - $400 dollar price range. So far I have found the best bargain on ebay and is included at the link below. I am looking to rebuild the motor for the car to be my daily driver and also withstand having an aftermarket intake and full exhaust on board. Nothing necessary for major horsepower gain... Has anyone ever used this brand on engine overhauling kits? Or does anyone have any other suggestions for a better, more wallet-friendly rebuild? :|:|:|

My Gs has 205,000 miles on the block and now my cylinder #2 has half the compression when compared to the rest of the other 3 cylinders. Whether or not its the head or the block, I want to overhaul the entire motor and start off with a clean slate. I plan on ripping her apart over winter break between my semesters at school. It will definitely be a great learning experience and I just want to make sure I am working with some decent material for the rebuild.

Spending money on a stock rebuild ? Sounds like a waste unless you are building it with a purpose and changing parts to change compression or forge it to handle more power. Otherwise just pickup a used motor for a couple hundred bucks...dunno about where you are but around here they are a dime a dozen...oh and as far as ebay engine parts are concerned, you get what you pay for and i'll put money on the fact that those parts are not going to last 205k miles like the OEM ones did...or even close to that...just some food for thought.

it looks like a decent kit, but if you are not getting at least your whole timimg kit gates i would not install it on my car.....

Does anyone know how good are hasting piston rings for STD or.020 over bore.

Hasting piston rings are good rings for any piston size.... i have them on my 1g .20 over bore and they are
great seal really good, and hold compression really good.

buy a 4g63.. best bang for your buck

Than he will have a 4g63 sitting there that doesn't fit in his car. Great idea.

I would do a leakdown test to see where it is not sealing. If it isn't smoking like crazy than i wouldn't just assume that it needs rings. It is likely in the valves.

I didnt mean buy a 4g63 motor and drop and play thats impossible with the gs. Let me rephrase, buy another eclipse/talon with a 4g63 thats blown, rebuild it and go from there.

BTW bryanwheat i live in jefferson city my names bryan when i sell dsm parts on here or on craigslist i get everyone asking me "oh your bryan?? bryan wheat??" ROFL

That's funny, LOL. I've sold parts to quite a few guys down there.

Well like I was saying, all I care about is having a clean Gs as my daily driver. The car eats a quart of oil every two weeks and obviously needs new rings. I had rebuilt the head about 40 thousand miles ago and had the valve seals all replaced and such. Once Im out of college and get financially stable then I will start worrying about mondo performance and will probably upgrade to an Evo IIV or IV with the 4G63. :hellyeah: I know all you turbo lovers look down upon the 420a, but like I was saying before shes just a daily cruiser with good looks! Thank you for the advice so far!

Looks like a decent kit. Since its just a standard rebuild without the intention of running turbo, the components should be well balanced for the application. Good luck with the rebuild. :thumb:

Well, good you have a plan on building your 420A engine.

First thing to do is get the engine apart and see what parts you need and what over sizes, if any.

It will not do you any good if you get std rings/pistons then find out you need .5mm (.020) over.

The block, crank and rods all need to be checked out to see if it is all close to spec.

You may want to find a core engine and rebuild thatone, and keep driving the one in the car now, then swap them out when when the rebuilt one is done and ready to go in.

This will keep the down time on your car to a weekend, not a couple few weeks.

Thats a great suggestion and I am most definitely considering building this motor up on the side. Its a nearly matter of a funding what comes into play and deciding what route to go. Its tough being a broke college student.... ;)

Yes sir. Between my father and I we are capable of doing such a task. I would probably just have the head and block resurfaced at a machine shop if necessary. How much are you charging for a standard 420a rebuild kit?

Personally I would do as above mentioned. Find a motor that is blown, but not a hole through the block, build that to stock spec's. Swap in 1 weekend, then keep playing with the motor that was in your car, over summers and such.
