Is a cam locking tool really required/necessary to change the cam belt on a 420A non-turbo? I was considering getting a cam locking tool, but I am also going to change the stock cam gears to adjustable ones, so I wondered if I'd even have a real opportunity to use it much? Also, any hints at removing the stock gears I should be aware of, like a special puller, etc?

The cam lock tool is not necessary whatsoever. I usually just zip tie the top of the timing belt to the cam gears after getting the timing marks to meet. There are provisions for a wrench on the camshafts, just put a wrench on the bolt at the end of the cam and a wrench on the camshaft itself and twist!

There is a bolt under each cam sprocket that can be accessed inside the cam gear, I put a huge flat head against the bolt for a wedge and it came off with wrench and a breaker bar on the for the cam gear bolt. Zip ties is a great idea wished I thought of that before doing the job, now I got a timing issue :(
