Hi, I just finished mocking up my exhaust for my 1g awd. its 4" aluminum, it runs in the stock location, or fairly close.

Its big stuff, I can't fit it in the exhaust tunell like I could the 3" stuff because its just too big, and I have a dss driveshaft, so the driveshaft is bigger as well, anyways. Its tight under the oil pan and beside the Tcase, and its tight up against the bottom of the last section of driveshaft, and tight against the rear control arm mount there, then it angles up and exits at the rear.

when i say 'tight' i mean it fits good but has clearance, so.. Ive got about 4.5" of ground clearance under the rear dif, and in the center of the car at the lowest spot (rear), ive got 5" then it slopes up to where I have about 6" of clearance.

im just worried when I load the car on the trailer, I know the section under the wheels will lift with the car, its just the section in the middle. I mean, the ramps aren't steep since my trailer deck tips.

Just curious if anyone else did a 4" or bigger full exhaust on their dsm? Im just wondering what kind of ground clearance you have, mine fits awesome I think, It came together really well, and I don't really see how it could fit up any tighther, so im just curious as to what type of results others had when it came to clearance.

Thanks! Ill get some pics up when its all finished.

I did a 4" side exhaust for my Holset HX52 because the hotside is a 4" v-band, but I wouldn't think that a 4" exhaust on a s258 would make a huge factor.

There are a bunch of guys over on the "other" forum who run FULL 4" exhaust. I know one of my favorites as far as simplicity would be Brian from JMF who's build page can be found in the build section over there under 91tsi somethin-somethin LOL, you'll know it when you see it its like 40 pages long or something ridiculous.

Here's a link to my 4" setup: http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/151994314-post90.html

It starts off as a reverse sided SS down pipe into a SS flex section into an aluminum section and ends off at the SS muffler. All sections are connected using V- clamps so it is a breez to take it apart and put it back together. I saw you posted in my build thread so you probably seen it. Ground clearance isn't really an issue, I had no problems loading it on and off my trailer either when we were lugging the shell around either. You should be fine... Take the typical precautions of course.

Thanks guys, yeah it's 4" Full exhaust, just no muffler. No classses up here require it, it would be very easy to add one in later.

I will be using a bep s372 (72mm) turbo next season, so no I agree 4" isn't needed on a s258. I just haven't updated my profile yet, and I will be using all vbands same as my current exhaust, I will never use a flange for exhaust ever again.

Tsimage in the center or so of your car, aprox how much ground clearance does your exhaust have ? And how did you do the hangers for the aluminum section?

It is extremely light, I'd say 1/3 of the stainlesss 3" setup easy, material is fairly cheap too.

The other thread LOL this guy. I thought about going with a full 4" buut its a catch 22. You go full exhaust to make your car more streetable and then you kill your ground clearance and make it hard to drive on the street in some areas especially if you lower the car. I opted for a custom 4"id muffler that I will put inline with my side exsit exhaust and just learn to live with whatever level of loudness I get.

Thats true but I guess you havnt lived in NYC with NYPD rookies in your a**, (no ####). That side exhaust exit would of got me done for if they saw that.

My RX8 sits like 2"s off the ground, you get use to driving with a brain and looking ahead on the road to avoid problems, coming up with clever ways to get in and out of drive ways is also fun.. LOL. I wish it was on bags liek the truck but that's not an option. DSMs sit high enough that you should be ok.

Out here side exit isn't even an option, matter fact some tracks wont even allow it in some street classes. You can tuck it up there far enough that you have quite adequate clearance. there is also an option of the oval pipes that you can buy. They are ovaled and have the same volume of a regular 4" pipe but it allows more clearance. Just another route. We used it on some Supras we have built which unlike the DSM actually would have an issue with 4" exhaust.

I work in Philly where there are potholes and bumps in the road the size of shaq so trust me your "brain", unless you can make your car fly aint getting you out of trouble.

I hear ytou guys with the cops but that was the reason for the muffler. Granted it won't be quiet but it will be quieter than nothing. Straight 4" exhaust without a muffler won't be that much quieter if at all then a side exhaust with one. As for the track I can understand wanting to go full exhaust to meet a certain class but with the OP's future turbo potential sounds like he will be with the big dogs with good tuning and supporting mods where it wouldn't be as much a issue.

theres a few pics guys.. figured id post it up. downpipe isn't done, won't get to do that till car comes back from chassis shop. Im not running a muffler at this time.

Id like to give special thanks to Aaron from www.weirtech.ca for the welding on this exhaust. I don't have the equipment to weld aluminum, however I did do 100% of everything else myself. The aluminum hangers were tricky to bend. I have about.. ~$160 cad in the cost of this exhaust, aluminum is very affordable compared to stainless, it makes sence on a race car that requires a full 4" system.

it looks like its close to the driveshaft (which is covered in black exhaust from my previous 3" system w/cutout).. but it really has more then enough room everywhere, theres lots of hangers so its not like this thing swings around everywhere.

sorry about the quality of pics, there Iphone pics. Easiesr to take pics/upload on facebook/paste links here.. can't be bothered to take pics with my slr and host them etc..

slippi, there are no big dogs in canada man, ill be running against myself. I went to every sport compact event we had up here basically.. (there aren't many) and I seen maybe 2-3 sport compacts that went 9 seconds, 1 being a hotrod civic which runs 8s, and another was a 240 with a 2j.. there is magnus but their hotrod dsm never seems to get a clean pass. Im looking to travel into the US and run with some guys down there.

our roads are pretty good up here for the most part, mostly because of the high income taxes we get to pay up here in Ontario Canada the upkeep is good.. so is the healthcare.

Looks real good. As for no big dogs in Canada idk about all that I met some dsm quebec guys at the showdown and they have some pretty quick cars.

Our roads aren't that bad out here, even the bad ones you can use your line of sight to avoid catastrophe.. And all in all clearance isn't that bad. There is little loss from having the full exhaust, it weighs the same as my friends SS side exit which is also 4" and besides that gives the car a cleaner more "street" look. A side exit will get you pulled over quick. There's no arguing or squeaking out of that one even the tiniest bit. I have a muffler too so I can't imagine it being much louder than my 3" Buschur, especially with it being aluminum it shouldn't resonate as much either.

It's fun fooling people into thinking your car is a sleeper and getting their reaction when your car wakes up.. I couldn't imagine baiting anyone with a side exit LOL. But to each their own, thats the great thing about preference.. Keeps us from all driving the same car. :thumb:

friends asked me 'if your just doing mostly racing, why a full exhaust'.. well.. when you see cars with full exhaust, you often think less naturally than if they have it though the hood or side exit. Plus.. come classes require it here!

Till they relize its aluminum, then they know you mean business! hahah.

sure man, i agree. there are a few, but its not like in the south and on the east/west coast where its a all year season unlike up here, we have 6 months of racing usually.

I was at the shootout last year, I wish they were on different days.

I don't careif you have your exaust in all the same locations as stock, a 10 point cage a hole in your bemper the size of ohhhh a chuet bar and a battery cutoff to boot yiour as much a sleeper as a car with traction bars and a supercharger out the hood

I take it you don't understand what the concept of a "sleeper is"

You are comparing something such as an obnoxious side exit exhaust (muffler or not, its still louder than full exhaust) which is a quite obvious visual to other items that are hard to see...

The RaceCarShop built cage is invisible from out side of the car. Even up close you cant see it until you open the door. (one of the reason I chose this shell over the others available, its pretty crazy how creative these cage shops can get) The battery poles and switch are hidden behind the middle "light" plastic piece and the chute hole has a black plug, but even without the plug there is no way someone would be able to make it out as anything other than light distortion on a black car with a fresh paint job.

For example:

Now if it had a fat 4" exhaust sticking out of the side, it kind of kills the idea. :hmm: There are something you just can't hide. But the closer to plain you can make it, the easier it is. If it meets my goals, that is about as stock looking as a single digit DSM will look from the outside. As street as possible I guess. regardless, side exit isn't an option in a lot of the big time street car classes, and the decible rules for some tracks wont allow a side exit easier. Just a lot of reasons for me not to run it. My white shell was going to be side exit, but this just makes life easier.

It was hard to do the whole "sleeper look on the white car with a fatty hole in the front bumper: (never mind the fitment, its not bolted in the middle)

I think you have it confused. I'm not knocking anyone for having side exit exhaust. Its a personal choice, but unarguably a full exhaust will be quieter and more reminiscent of a true street car. That's all I want from it. I rather give cops the least amount of reason to hassle me. Driving around in my "sleeper" mode, I see no reason wh they'd even consider giving em a second look. The intercooler is an all other issue, but that might find itself anodized black. Its all good in the end.

Your killing me maqn LOLo. I understand sleeper but the unarguable point is that is not a sleeper car. A sleeper car in a nut shell is a car procieved to be slow but in reality is far from it. A awd talon to anyone that knows cars is and will always be looked at as a quick car. Itsw like saying well my ccamaro ss has a stock muffler so poeople will think its slow...not happening. A dodge colt is a sleeper a awd talon sorry I'm not buying it. Your confusing uneducated car people for people who just underestimate quick and fast.

Not to mention no matter how long your pipe is a car fully built like the ones we both are talkingt about with 4" exhust will be loud as hell period. I agree full exhaust will be quieter....but quiet no.

If you rolled up on me setting aside I know your car, your loud exhaust mtches with your turbo wistle and your fuel sump would all be dead giveaways that this car is not messing around

But here lies the difference between a, "Hmm that car has something done to it, I just know it" and a, "Ahhhh hell naw I ain't fkin with him."

From a side profile which is how you'll normally see the car, there is little to give it away. With my proclassic lines, the sump is nearly hidden as well. Being a black car helps a lot with the stealth aspect. I agree that cars like colts are more sleepers but I had been rolled up on many times in my Talon before to know that people in general have no idea what these cars are capable of. Running into a well built fast DSM, and AWD one at that is few and far in-between. Many view the same on the street.. There is no way to perceive the car as a definite no-go other than blatant displays reminiscent of a race car, such as a side exit exhaust, "race inspired" body modifications, visible cages, gauges, etc.

My last Talon didn't look like a 10s car, it looked like just another DSM rolling around the street. No cut bumper (until I got bored) no over sized gauges, no visible cage, nothin'.. There was no way for them to know that their feelings were shortly going to be hurt. This is the sleeper aspect I am talking about. Any time your car can be perceived as slower than it truly is, this is a form of a sleeper.

Regardless of the definition or even getting into that, if you rolled up on 2 cars, one was all cut up, side exit exhaust and the works, you automatically can figure that its a race car. If you roll up on one, even if it sounds kind of suspicious, you still have no idea what you are in for, and that is the affect I have achieved in the past and in comparison to the magnitude of the build I will achieve with this one.

I remember seeing Jake hit the track and he'd run and you'd just be blown away. All of a sudden he had the holes in the rear bumper, holes in the front bumper, lexan windows, it took away from the "under dog" image and it looks like every other race car. It was still bad ass, just in a different way. It didn't look like a street car any more (and by rule definition wasn't) so it didn't have the shock and awe it once did, but he made up for it by running amazing times. That's also why guys like my buddy Dave W. are such inspirations to me, when he drove his car damn near hrs to the track, showed up in this stock looking silver DSM with a itty bitty 14b and proceeded to rip everything a apart and set records hitting his 11.5 runs, then drove home past unsuspecting people/cops it was mind blowing. People would come into the pits looking for the car that ran the 11s. We'd point at Dave's car and they'd be like, "No, that's not it.. it ran 11s!..."

Different strokes for different folks of course.
