This is probably stupid to most of you, but I want to know how my 4 cylinder can beat pretty much any v6. Like the mustang v6. Is it because of weight? Or are some manufacturers better than others? Or is it in the driver's skills as a driver? Is it possible for a basically stock 4 cylinder to beat a v8? Just want to know....

A V6 mustang is pretty much the same design as the Mustang GT so it has all the weight too.

It is pretty much all up to power/weight ratio.

Power to weight is huge, as mentioned.

So is traction, gearing, power curves, etc.

There are way too many variables (including driving ability) to predict the outcome of a race based solely on engine size.

Thats a pretty strong statement.

Forced Induction evens out the odds quite a bit AND:
From the hole: Power-to-weight ratio is a big factor
Top end: Horsepower and aerodynamics determine the winner.

There are alot of potent V6s out there like the Nissan VQ, Benz 3.2L V6, etc. that a non-turbo DSM would have problems with. A DSM is not necessarily a lightweight hovering at 3000 lbs.

3000 pounds??? it says right on my door that my 1G is 2000.

And my Ford Taurus tells me that my door is actually made of glass and is used to store food preserves. ;)

ahh...ok, it says GAWR is 2050....whatever that means, I have no idea

GAWR (Gross Axle Weight Rating):
The total weight each front/rear axle, suspension and tire system is designed to carry. When loading the unit, care should be taken to balance cargo weight in consideration of the GAWRs.

CURB WEIGHT is the one Im talking about which also includes fuel weight in the car.

Just because the engine is smaller doesn't mean it is weaker/slower.

There are PLENTY of V6 engines out there that are rated WAAAAAY below even the stock HP ratings of all DSM's. Find out what type of power they are putting down then compare it to your power.

Weight (as said above) also has alot to do with it. Ever wonder how much HP it takes to get a Hatch into the 12's? ;)

Traction is a good point aswell, but only if you are putting down REALLY high HP and are FWD handicap. OMG

Power-to-weight ratio matters throughout the whole race, not just at the beginning

ah a lot of those v6 mustangs are also driven by old ladies and are automatics. if you have a stick and launch decently u could prob beat a v6 auto stang right off the line. autos launching using brake torque tho can be a tough fight. also a turbo i4 would most likely have more power than a run of the mill v6 (crappy old grand prixs LOL) with less weight too. think ur 4banger will beat a twin turbo'd v6 supra? LOL cylinder count doesnt matter much until the engines are radically modified, then the 4 wont go as far.

A stock turbo DSM can walk on some pretty reputiple v8's, a mildly modded DSM will own the streets, agains v8's and in some cases supercharged v8's

hmmm now as i recall the early 90's cherokees with the v6 high outputs could do a high 14 quater mile... thats what i recall from a year or so ago so idk. all i know is driving my dads 90 cherokee sport with the inline 6 and auto tranny ill get beat by a school bus from a dead stop and in power 4x4 mode :thumbdown

They made a Jeep GC Limited in the early 90s with Dodge's crusty Magnum 5.9L that would supposedly do high 14s/low 15s.

I believe its the simple fact a DSM takes in more air and fuel per cylinder and causes better combustion than the opposing V6 or V8. Plus, it takes less to get a 4 cylinder going than it does a 6.

And you never know what someone has under their hood. I was laughed at so many times in my GTP, but somehow I never lost on the street.

Jeep had a V6 in the 80's. It was a GM 2.8. It sucked nuts.

Jeep also had a 4.0 Straight 6. It was offered as an HO. It had torque.

Oh, and using power mode on an auto makes me laugh at you. :thumb:
