I would like to make sure that all that is required for the 4 bolt rear swap is:

-carrier housing
-axles
-axle cups
-(fasteners also).

Now If I have a automatic rear end, but my car is manual, Can I use the pinion and ring gear from my manual on the automatic LSD? Can I use My LSD as opposed to the automatic one?
how do the carrier assemblys differ from each other??

Thanks

actually I see the differences in the two carrier assemblies, and the axle configuration as far as how the cv's are located...

Yes, that's all you need.

The LSD and the rear carriers are the same for an auto or manual. The ring and pinions are different. You can swap the gears but I am not sure exactly what is needed to set them up or if it something you could do in your own garage. Everyone just swaps the whole rear end.

WHOA!! You didn't ask the differences from the 3 bolt to the 4 bolt, only from automatic to manual. The internals from the 3 bolt WILL NOT work in a 4 bolt! The axles are different diameters so the side gears and LSD is different. Will the 3 bolt ring and pinion swap into 4 bolt rear?? I don't know. Never heard of anyone trying it.

4 bolt automatic internals will work with 4 bolt manual internals.

I've heard from numerous people that swapping the guts from one to another WILL work. I'm going to be trying it in about 2 weeks, I think.

if you are swaping it you will want to make sure that you don't mix non lsd parts with lsd parts. i was planing on doing it but ended up never doing it. I am not sure if its been done before but i don't see a problem with swaping the guts from one to another. Good luck with it

by "guts" do you both mean the pinion gear and ring gear? As long as they fit on the diff they should be interchangeble between the 3 bolt and the 4 bolt.

i know for sure that one of my friends swapped what he called "the guts" out of a 3 bolt into his 4 bolt - i just don't know what he meant by guts LOL

sounds like a bad idea to me actually, i've been messin around w/ my 84 supra's rear end for months now, the problem lies in that each differential has different spacers on the sides to make the ring and pinion match up correctly if they don't you experience excessive wear and terrible noises, you need some type of lash measureing tool and the ability to make your own spacers or someone that will, this is not soemthign to toy around w/ unless you work at or are great friends w/ a machine shop. i would definatly advise against it, i've been finding out the hard way w/ the supra, and learning how to drop ur rear end out in 20 mins isn't one of those skills you want. each to ur own but i wouldn't dare try it, best of luck

I don't think measuring backlash is a huge obstacle...If you really wanted to avoid doing it yourself, you could simply take the unit to a tranny shop and have them measure it for you.
My repair manual from chrysler is very detailed on that topic, but I have not got around to reading it. I'm sure that I am capable of tackling that project if I really wanted to. First I'll get my car running, then I consider it. I have an auto rear end waiting for me.

Thanks

If all went well then you check the tooth contact pattern and If its no good(most definately)adjust accordingly to the manual, more measuring, shimming, assemble, dissassem, reassem, over an over agian~ yeah! doesnt that sound fun! :p and I get left with a bunch of useless for now shims.

Even the rebuilders dont get it right the first time, trial and error process I guess. They gots access to every thickness shim they want and every tool they need.

I hope your rebuild goes way smoother than what I had to go through,it was a nightmare. If you're good at conpromising than it'll be alot easier/faster process.

good luck

I'm sure it's a skill that needs to be developed.

I take it everything is functioning properly now??

Thanks
