3rd gear keeps poppingo out, WHY???

i have a 96 eclipse GS with about 89,000 miles and just recently i've had a problem with my third gear in the car (obviously 5spd). When i'm driving at normal speeds in 3rd gear the shifter pops out of gear and goes to nuteral. It happened once, then a week later happened again, then a couple days later happened twice. Its only third gear that does it and it just happens randomly at normal driving speeds.

Does anyone know what this could be??????

What I am about to say I have heard so dont qoute me on it, i am hoping someone can back me up! I have read that it is caused by the shift fork going bad. I have heard of it happening in 5th though. One cause is resting your arm on the shifter constantly, and of course natural wear.

the shift fork is something i heard from another person too. Is it possilb eo just buy a new shift fork for the car, or does it need a whole new tranny now?

First, I would check the big nut on the end of the tranny under the cover behind the pass wheel, check the vfaq on how to tighten it. That way you dont' have to take the tranny out, like you would if it's the shift fork. I took apart 3 trannies in one week and every single one had that nut loose, on one it wore a hole in the cover.
Check it and save some time, everyone should do this today, no joke. So easy and shifts tighter.

shift fork. look at the syncro hub & fork see what the clearence looks like.
