I'm rebuilding my entire head, new everything. Should I get a 3 angle valve job to be sure my new valves seat properly? I'm going to install everything myself, but does the machinist need my springs and seals to do the 3 angle valve job if it's necessary?

Okay, so do they just need the valves to do the angle job, or my springs and seals too?

When I get the head back I'll need to lap them too, right? Or is that part of the job.

speedboi.... no they will not need your springs and seals if your going to assemble the head.... But why do you want to do thet?

it depends on the shop... some shops that do not have the modern seat/guide machines do not do a 3 angle valve job, they use stones, or a neway seat cutter set up.. these methods are not the best out but still used,If this is the method that the shop uses, find another shop or lap the valves.
ask what kind of seat machine they have. and if they are the carbide blade insert style. with this style of equipment, there is no need in lapping a valve.

but be aware, the shop will ###### charge you the same price for the valve job, weather they dissassemble /reassemble the head or not.

also are you equiped to set the tip height of the valves once the seats are machined?

Ahhh, I didn't realize that cost wont matter if I want to assemble it myself or not..

I was not aware about setting the tip height, does this have something to do with grinding the tips to meet the installed height? What measurements / checks do machinists perform when they do this kind of job?

The machine shop that redid my valve job, said that the 4g63 heads have 3 angle valve jobs from factory. i had the valve job redone because i ported the head and hit the seats. i also laped my valve seats afterward though they didnt need it. you can use a light and shine it all around the valves on the combustion chamber side and look inside the port to see if the valves leak.

yes thats one way the tip height is set, if it is too long, if too short then the valve face or seat is machined to achive the proper height...

if you look towards the bottom of this .. it shows how tip height is set when new seats are installed...
