I planed on rebuilding my trans myself because of the lack of funds and all the time in the world. Here is a little background information on what happend. For the longest time my car would grind to get into second unless i would double clutch it so i thought it was a syncro problem. I drove on it for a while cause at the time it was my DD for some odd reason. But now the car wont go into second gear at all. So i am pretty sure that my second gear is round. I have been looking around the forums and i have been reading a lot of people have the same problems i was having, and they said pull the case off and check those 36mm nuts do you think that could be the problem? And if not do you know of any sites that will have a walkthrough on a rebuild?

The 36mm nuts you mention is usually to fix a problem with shifter movement while the car is in gear, especially 5th. There is info for that here: http://www.geocities.com/qwik93awd/Vfaq/shifter.htm That doesn't sound like your problem.

As far as tranny rebuild info, there is some information here: http://www.vfaq.com/mods/Trannyrebuild.html There is also a rebuild manual somewhere on the internet that might be helpful. Chances are you'd have to replace the synchro as well as the 1st/2nd hub/slider assembly and potentially second gear. It takes quite a few special tools to work on trannies. At a minimum, you need snap ring pliers, a press, and a bearing splitter/remover. I'd highly recommend sending it off to places like Shep if you can afford it. Good luck.
