I'm in the middle of replacing my clutch and I can't get the tie rod off. How do you remove it without that special tool?

Are you trying to remove it from the knuckle or removing it completely?
Just smack the side of the knuckle with a hammer.
The tie rod end is tapered into the knuckle just like the ball joint.
A couple good hits should pop that sucker loose.

There is a tie rod removal tool at any auto parts store. Its a large fork with tapered fingers.
You will need to cut those off most likely with either a saw or a bolt cutter or cutoff disc. The nuts/studs spinning is very common.
