So, I built this car in about 6 months, I definitely don't know much about electronics or the ecu so I'm at a loss. I did a manual swap on this 420a, I think the trans code is nvt350 or something like it. I found a good walkthru forum about it. Pretty much followed it step by step. Aside from I originally forgot to wire up the neutral safety switch on the clutch to the starter relay. But I went back, did it, and the starter relay is definitely flipping, and my engine will not even turn over. I have power everywhere. I have good grounds on the engine.
I've looked around and I'm not really sure what I'm missing. I'm using a manual ecu from a 98, I think, it was given to me. So hard to be sure.
And the pcm and dash is the original harness from the AT . Everything mated up nicely on the harnesses except the ignition coil pack plug was wrong, but that was an easy splice. The original harness has 1 plug that has no home because of the missing AT. Not sure exactly what its for. But I doubt that would not allow me to turn it over.
At this point I've been thinking about just cutting the safety switch out, and wiring a kill switch, batt disconnect, and a starter switch and not even mess with this whole harness thing.
If anyone has had a similar problem or has any ideas as to what I should check or try, I'm sure I missed something. But when you've been looking at the same engine and wires for hours, it's hard to pinpoint what you missed😅😅

did the original coil pack connector on your harness have round pins?

if it had round pins the harness is from a 96.

a 96 ecu isn't pinned the same as a 98.

96-97 ecus are pinned the same
98-99 ecu are pinned the same

and you can buy pigtail from AZ, but I don't think you can connect wrong one to incorrect one

but if he has a 96 harness (round pins on original coil connector) and he is using a 98 ecu, a few of the pins need to be swapped on the ecu connector.

if the car is a 98 and the pcm harness is a 98 and original to the car, why would the plug for the coil pack be wrong?

The harness from the original had 2 separate ecu blocks, one under the dash in the center and one on the d/s of the engine bay. I removed it entirely, harness and both ECUs. I bought a new block from a friend that had changed the internals and he gave me 2 transmissions and the harness and ecu for them for free. The ecu i was given mates up to the harness i was given perfectly, not sure how to tell if I need to repin anything. He said they were a 98, I wasnt sure if they were different bc of the trans being manual or if he was wrong about the year. All the plugs that came out from under the dash on the old ecu and Harness are on this "new" harness, minus a separate ecu. 2 blue plugs, and 2 white, the starter relay, and seat control are all the same on both old and new harness
The coil pack pigtail I believe did have round plugs but bc all the wires were the exact same color and location on both the AT and MT harnesses with just the wrong connectors, I just cut and spliced the correct end on to it.
The only other thing I can thing of with the harnesses is that the AT has a plug for the cruise control vacuum cylinder thing (forgive my lack of terminology) and the MT doesn't. Don't think that has anything to do with it not starting
The harness for the dash (what I referred to as the pcm. Not sure what the name of the harness and controller for the interior is. ) doesn't power the coil pack, the ecu does, so the coil pack I bought was for a 98 AT, so the plug needed to be from a 98 AT. I switched without really thinking about the harness possibly being from a different year

I haven't, not even really sure how I would do that.
I tend to steer clear of electrical stuff😅 so I'm a newbie when it comes to messing with factory wiring.
so relay is located behind the radio, take out the relay and insert paperclip or jump wire on red and black wire and connect the other end to the socket with the black and yellow wire

How about starter motor, could it be bad
I got it! The negative plug on the starter was unpinned, ever-so-slightly. Was going thru checking every plug and connection and noticed it.
Unfortunately this uncovered a bigger issue. My high pressure fuel line has a pin hole in it and is spraying 😫

so did you get the car to start or just turn over?

if you originally had round pins on the coil pack connector, the harness has to be for a 96. the plugs on the ecu look exactly the same but if you try to use a 96 or 97 harness with a 98/99 ecu, only one coil will fire and the alternator won't work . there are a few more things but i can't think of them right now.

here are the ecu part numbers if you need them.

I got it to turn over, that's when I noticed the fuel leaks. It kinda wanted to start but I don't think it's getting much fuel at all. After looking at it further, there are multiple big leaks in the line, so I'm going to replace it. And hence the reason I started another thread about FPRs and lines that you answered on. (Thank you btw, you've been pretty helpful)

And as for the harness and ecu, I'm pretty confident they're the same year, but I'll check the numbers when I get home! Thank you for that part number
