Hi Everybody,

This is my first post here. I have a questions about my car. I have a 1998 GSX and it caught on fire. Head, wiring harness, sensors etc. is fried and there are very few usable parts in the car. I will post pictures when i get home. My dilemma is to either fix the car and drive it or sell it. My cousin has a 1991 Mitsubishi GSX with automatic transmission. I want to take the motor from the 1991 GSX and put it in my 1998 GSX with my existing transmission. Wiring harness, pc, sensors are all coming from the 1991 GSX. My 2nd question is: is it legal to swap from OBDII to OBDI in New York State and is it possible to do?

Thanks for all the responses in advance.

Yes, what your looking at is a 6bolt swap. A lot of people have dropped a 1g engine into there 2g. There is a lot of well documented work and howto's for this.

here's a good tech article on it:

you will need to modify your CAS

You'll need a new flywheel too if your car is a manual, and the donor car is an automatic(uses flexplate)

How did your car catch on fire???

I think he wants to use the harness out of the 91, his is all burnt up. I can't help but I don't think his cam sensor would need to be modified if this were the case. He is still using his trans also.

I see wiring problems at the dash and the difference in where the ECU is located compared to the 1g. The lentghs of the wires would be all crazy. I just don't see it working very easily at all.

You could get a replacement harness for your car and then do the 6 bolt swap like blackbyrd linked. IMO This is your best bet if you want to keep the 2g chassis. Someone parting out a 2g would be your best bet to find the parts, or a 2g rolling chasis, or a junkyard. Coming back from a fire is a lot of work though. I bought my car totaled in a fire for $450. The fire seemed to orginate from the fuel line/coil area. I replaced almost everything under the hood except the motor and trans (rebuilt of course). The original surviving underhood parts are the valve cover, (I chiseled melted plastic off of it) the exhaust manifold and the coolant overflow and washer bottle.

.

Both 2g turbo and 1g ecu is in the same location.

If you have emissions, the 1g ecu conversion will be illegal. It can be done but is it really cost effective? I would do the engine swap and just find a replacement harness.

i dont know what caused the fire but it started in the same area as Auto RS T. I am thinking my battery wasn't stable and it was touching the chasis and it shorted and burned all the wires all the way to the ECU.

Ok, I think i made up my mind. I am going to keep my car, get the car painted under the hood and drop a 1G engine with 2G ECU. Since i am doing all this work, this can be a 2 year process and i want to do it right the first time. As far as the engine goes, to get more power, what should i do? I read it in a lot of places that 1G rods are good but 2G pistons are better but i don't want to use any parts from the burnt engine, i want to get new aftermarket pistons. I am gonna get a new flywheel and clutch (even though mine is ok). Is there anything else you guys suggest.

I am going to put up pictures of the car as soon as i get a chance. Thanks for all the links because they helped out a lot.
