first thing i'm sorry i know there's a million threads about this but when i searched for it, it came up like 20+ pages of this and i've been reading through many of them and none of them are answering my questions. i know the 2g mas flows better than the 1g, so what do i need to put one in my car, will i have to get a whole new intake pipe, and will i need something to tune my car?

Here you go:
http://vfaq.com/mods/2GMAF-1G.html

And yes.

It's worth noting that you should focus as much energy as possible in getting a logger and a wide band o2... BEFORE anything else... I know, it's hard to see how great these two things are, but you'll come back one day and say "Thank you bling5tatus, you're a borderline genius, I'm glad you told me the answers from the beginning."

MY friend rana stock 2g mas on a 93 tsi without anything to tune with, along with other BPU's and it ran fine but you will need a pigtail from both a 1g and 2g to make a harness to plug into the 2g mas from your 1g car. a custum harness you can make yourself.

can i just instead put a 2g mas in a 1g instead of modding my 1g aircan, and get the plug adapter from a 2g. then i will definetly need a safc?

Some of this has been already mentioned above, but I started writing before they were posted... so here is my $0.02 worth.

Since the 2g MAF flows more air you will need to upgrade to larger injectors, and fuel pump. Also, if you want to be able to plug back in your old 1g MAF for any reason... you need to get/make a plug and play wiring harness. This is not necessary, but makes things much easier (http://www.vfaq.com/mods/2GMAF-1G.html). You'll also need an air filter that mounts to a 2g MAF. 1g K&N filters can be retrofit (http://dsm.dejonpowerhouse.com/), but that is not your only option. Upgrading the pipe is not necessary (see VFAQ), but given that the turbo side of the 2g MAF is rectangular in shape vs. the circular shape of the 1g MAF... I chose to upgrade. I personally went with a DeJon 2g pipe for a 1g (http://dsm.dejonpowerhouse.com/), but several places make pipes. Although, I believe DeJon is the only place that offers a pipe that can be order with all the connections (for those of us in CA that need to be smog legal). You should also plan on tuning the car (i.e., data logger and SAFC, or DSMLink etc). Also, depending on your setup you may need a fuel pressure regulator, but that may not be necessary if you go mild with your setup. Good luck and read as much as you can to ensure the best results.

If you could not extrapolate the information from previous posts, here's another way to look at it:

Pin 1 on the 2G connector goes to the green/red wire that was pin 4 on the 1G harness.
Pin 2 on the 2G connector goes to the green/yellow wire that was pin 7 on the 1G harness.
Pin 3 on the 2G connector goes to the green/blue wire that was pin 2 on the 1G harness.
Pin 4 on the 2G connector goes to the red wire that was pin 3 on the 1G harness.
Pin 5 on the 2G connector goes to the green/black wire that was pin 6 on the 1G harness.
Pin 6 on the 2G connector goes to the green/orange wire that was pin 8 on the 1G harness.
Pin 7 on the 2G connector goes to the green/white wire that was pin 1 on the 1G harness.
Pin 8 on the 2G connector has nothing

People should start looking into the evo8/3g mass
Outflows the 2g mass, and ive ran one before and it worked flawlessly with a keydiver tune to compensate. Made my intake noises more audiable.

Thats true but from everyone ive seen, theyre more expensive.

The 2G flows enough for something like 400-500whp.
It may be just me but i see no point in paying the extra money for the extra flow i dont need.

The 2g is everywhere and cheap

This is a valid point, id say just stick with the 2g mass unless you can find someone selling a 3g or evo mass for the cost of the 2g mass.. Luckly I had gotten mines for 40 bucks from a friend, but that was on my old gst, im content with just running the 2g mass on my laser.

Nope. Where the intake hose connects to the mas, the cross section of the 2g mas is shaped like an oval, where the 1g mas is a circle. I recall the 2g "oval" being much bigger than the 1g "circle" also, so I dont' think that you'd be able to stretch it to fit.

The evo/ 3g mass works perfect with the 1g intake arm the 3g mass is also smaller and there is
adaptors for the filter carried at local autoparts stores like pepboys that work with the 3g mass and 2g mass.
The 2g mass doesnt connect to the 1g intake arm, but I currently use a 1g intake arm for my 2g mass.
Cant really explain how i did it in thru typing and I dont have pics, but
basically i found a coupler that was circle on one end and bigger and oval on the other end and i just put a 3inch piece of pipe the same diameter of the intake opening in the intake arm while leaving an inch of it exposed and clamped it down and then clamped the coupler on the exposed part of the pipe, and then clamped the oval part of the coupler onto the 2g mass connection
and no problem... May be hard to picture what im talking about though, but basically im just getting at that it can be done.
