I've got a 1g that's not highly modified as you can see in my profile (I'm running the stock ECU with no add-ons). I was wondering what the pros and cons are of a GM MAF setup versus a 2g MAF (not blow-thru) setup in terms of how easy it is (I'm not very good with computers and all those loggers) which one costs less, and which one flows more air.

-Thanks

2g maf would be best upgrade for you. GM maf is good blow thru set up but you need to buy the Translator then tune with it, but since you dont have that many mods just go with the 2g maf.

What are your goals? That is important for us to know because without it we can not givee you accurate information. To answer your questions about the differences this is the best I could do.

The GM MAF requires a translator device to convert its signal into a language that your ECU can understand. It will flow the most air and is easier to install, but is more than three times the cost of the 2G.

The 2G MAF will flow plenty of air for your current setup but it is more difficult to install. Here is a thread that may help-

Also if you chose to go this route then check out ebay, a junkyard, or the classifeds section to pick up a good MAF.

2g maf isn't exactly plug and play for him either. Nobody mentioned him having to buy an safc to tune with. You can't just plug in a 2g maf in a 1g and have it run right.

I would definatly say that is worth it and yes an SAFC will be very beneficial to you.

Whether you go with the MAF and Translator or switch to the 2G MAS, I recommend getting the SAFC either way. While the translator can be used to tune your car, at best it will be a coarse tune that will get you in the area of where you want your fuel and timing to be. With the SAFC, you can make the fine tuning adjustments to get the most out of your engine.

Hey you've got a 1g so you have a MAF that will overrun at around 300 hp. No matter what, if you want the potential and or the goal of over this you will need to tune another MAF into the system, whether that be 2g or MAFT.

The MAFT is very easy to tune and can tune in 6 rpm increments to 2%. That should be good enough even if tuning is a bit intimidating. And with the MAFT you can plug in a MAF that will not overrun and has been used for setups flowing air for +700hp. Then save up for DSMLink when the come out with their new version which allows the GM MAF to directly plug into your harness w/out needing a translator. Sell your translator on eBay and go to far higher levels. :thumb: The MAFT allows bowthru, which substantially improves spoolup. I even noticed a difference on my small 16g! OMG

However, I did hear from previous posts that you can wire a 2g MAF right in if you get a set of 550s, as the 2g MAF reports hertz counts at about 20% lower than the 1g for the same airflow. 550s are 19% larger. Anything else after that, the ECU can zero out with the fuel trims during idle and cruise but you get zero WOT tuning with this path. So It's not for someone who wants to get a better than stock tune out of their car. It's for those that just want to get more fuel cheaply and just run up the boost for a decent amount of power. I suppose. I don't like this route.

Not to dig up this old thread, but I got that 2g MAF and filter mentioned earlier, and I was wondering if I can splice that harness in and have no problems, or if it's more complicated than that, and if it can even be spliced in. Also I was wondering if a SAFC would be necessary(and I assume it would be)to make up for the added air flow, because they're expensive, and I'm not familiar with those kinds of electronics.
