I have a 2g Eclipse GSX with only 94,000 miles on it and 1,500 miles on a newly rebuilt motor. It has a 16g turbo. ECU was also tuned when running. I was driving one day and then my RPMs started to jump around and then shortly stalled out on me?

I went threw the basics checked spark, fuel pressure, any grounding issues, also replaced the fuel pump, scanned car for any codes, it threw a cam sensor code, replaced the sensor, and rescanned it no more codes. Car will still not start.

So I also checked the ECU for any burning, smells and leaking capacitors, nothing all looks good.

I also have a 2g 420a model that did the same thing, and did all the same stuff I did with the 2g GSX. I found out that its ECU had water damage to it being that it was located underneath the hood. That's when I than replaced the ECU in the RS and it started right up with no problem.

HELP I am running out of ideas? Is their any way I can get my ECU tested? I'd really hate to buy more stuff i dont need thanks.

Well it is a 97 GSX. I've checked spark, compression, timing, fuel, ECU for leaking compasitors and any burning smells, checked all fuse's, scanned car with OBDII, replaced cam sencer, hahaha still no start.

But their is one thing, I do not hear the fuel pump at all when key is in the on position (2clicks), nothing. But when I try to start it (turn it over) than I hear the fuel pump kick on an pumping fuel.

See you should be able to hear that pump it makes a loud buzzing noise to prime the engine with fuel. This is why I think your having a fuel issue I have seen an ecu that wasnt telling the fuel pump to send enough fuel and I hope this is not your problem since you ECU looks good you say. Disconnect the fuel line from the end after the filter underneath the car put a bucket underneath and see if you getting a lot of fuel coming out when you turn it over

ok cool i did pull the fuel line off after the fuel filter an it seems like their is pleanty of pressure . i do also have a 97 rs (420a motor) that did the same exact same thing an found that it was the ECU. is their a way i can get the ECU tested with it out of the car ? to see if it is good ?

About the only way to really test it is see if you have a buddy with a 97 gsx and put your computer in his car (if his runs that is), or you could see if ECMTuning, Inc. will take it then look it over and see if its good. Or you could take pics of it and email them and ask if they see anything wrong with it.

I remember I had a friend who's ecu would not let the fuel pump turn on and off it was so random but we found that his ecu was very dirty with oil and you say yours looks great

Ya it does look good but I'll defanetly take a nother look at it just to b sure than I just may have it tested at a shope down where I live thanks . If u can think of anything else let me know thanks

Your ECU is connected directly to your MFI and Fuel pump relay. Theyre a pair. When you get one, you also get the other when you buy one. If your ECU is bad, it will inhibit the MFI/FP relays from working at all. Hence, no fuel pump operation.

Do this: Disconnect your power from your starter and put the key to the Start position. Listen for the fuel pump. Youll know if its on. Loud whirring sound. The GSX pump doesnt start running until the key is in the start position.

Secondary check: Key on, egine off for 10 seconds. Then key all the way off. Listen for one click. Will sound like its coming from under the glove compartment. Thats an MFI check.

If no click, you have a bad ECU. Bad ground in the ECU, more likely. But WILL keep your car from starting.

Do both checks and if one works but the other doesn't it's the relay. If both don't work, bad ECU. If both work but no start then it's a physical issue.

Ive dealt with this before and it got really frustrating.

I hope this helps.

The OP all ready stated that he has good fuel pressure, I just can't beleave you guys keep talking about the fuel pump:banghead:.

The Fuel pump will not be ON on the on position (switch), so you will not be able to hear it, the pump only will turn ON when the engine is turning, untill then it will turn ON.

Please, RS and GSX are totaly different, so stop comparing them, It will not be the same.

To the OP.

Fallow what erkitner stated, he is right, that's the way it works, However, If you are getting fuel it means one relay is working, and if you are getting spark, then it means the other relay is working, there are only 2 relay that controls almost everything, One is for the fuel pump and the other is for the Coil, Resistor, Cam, crank sensor, etc, etc, etc, etc,..

One way to see if your ECU is working is, Turn to the switch to the ON position, the Engine light will turn ON, it will stay ON for a couple of seconds then it will turn OFF by it self, If it doesn't turn OFF, then your ECU is bad, or if your light doesn't come ON at any time, then its bad as well, If it turns ON when turning the key to the ON position and it goes off right after that, that means your ECU is working properly.

Have you read the tech article that Colt90tsi link you?. (How to diagnose a No-Start), that a realy nice article to fallow.

Is there any signs of fuel smelling or something like that?, If you are getting fuel, spark, compression, the only thing left is your Coolant temperature, If your coolant temperature is not working, It will tell the ecu and the ecu will delivers more fuel then it suppost to get, making the engine not to start and be flured with fuel, another thig is your firing order, make sure you have it right, also Check your spark plugs, if they are wet, It will not start, I would suggest to put some new plugs to be sure, some times that keeps from firing, forgot to mention, could be your crank sensor as well,....

I just reread your full thread and It is not a new start, :banghead:it just died when driving which I dought is your ECU, this should be some kind of ignition.
Have you check your fueses?, there is one fuse for the ECU at the engine compartment, make sure is good, don't just look at it, take it off test it, This might be your problem.

Sounds great thanks Erkitner an Miguel I will defanetly look in to That I'll let u guys know here in a few days Thaks again . I also checked all my fuses internal an external all tested good ?

Time to get the beast running. I was going with a billet block how ever things happen. I've done research day in and day out. I would like to hear from people about pros and cons with trial and error. I have a 97 GSX that has crank walk with about no more than 500 miles on new internals with a $5,500 rebuild. I am looking to still go with a 7 bolt how ever not too sure if I should go with a 92-94 7 bolt or a 98-99 split thrust 7 bolt? Any way I go I will be going with a hardened crank with newly rebuild head. also any recommendations on a trusted reliable shop to get the block and even complete my build to my specs (92,000 original miles)
Thank in advance,
Jason
