Im new to the DSM thing and i need some advice. Im geting my drivers lisance soon and i would like to get a 2g dsm but im not sure what to do, but a older one with bad engine and put in a new 4G63 and make it look like 97-99 model or get a 97-99 GSX or GST with lower miles. I don't want to pay to much money for this so i want what ever is cheaper. My other favorite car is the supra, but seeing how highly priced those are i don't think i will get that, and i also like dsm's. So if anyone can give me some tips that would be great, by the way i live in chicago so if there are any good shops beside drivers image that are good with cars, or any dsm specific car shops you can inform me about that would also be very helpful.

By older, how much older do you mean? These cars began in 1990, but for the general public they think of the 97+ body styling for DSM's. You can convert a 95-96 to look like a 97-99. GST will be cheaper since everyone wants a GSX. I got my first GST for 5200 and my 2nd for 2300. Both are 97's.

My biggest piece of advice is to be patient. I had been looking all over the country using autotrader to try to find a DSM for myself. I looked for months, then one day my Galant found me. It was local, too, which was SO much better than having to road trip cross-country to get a car I hadn't even seen in person.

Just be patient and find exactly what you're looking for. Don't settle on something unless it's exactly what you want.

Let me break it to you now. Get a GSX from the start because regardless if you get a GST you're going to be always saying... I want a GSX.. Damn it! I should of bought a GSX... Shit! I want AWD!

yes i would say be very patient and don't settle for a n/t. you'll kick your self later. i like the 97 and up but im converting my 96 talon into an eclipse. talons are cheaper but sometimes harder to find. its just want you want. my advise TSi for an eagle or gst gsx for mitsubishi. low miles are going to cost you but hell if you got the money.

Have you seen my setup? :D

even if i find a GSX should i still swap in a new 4G63? also wouldnt a GST be the same thing as the GSX except the AWD? So do u guys think i should get a 4G63 swap when i buy car? cause most DSM's have high mileage.

Check the compression of the motor. If it checks to be fine, then your good to go. Gst and GSX both came with the 4g63t so no need to swap if the motor is still good. Compression should be around 178 i believe for it to be perfect. I think the recommended rebuild limit is like 130 with no more than 15psi in difference between cylinders? Someone else needs to verify this please.

well i checked edmunds and autotrader..... GSX and GST with low miles r like 10 grand man.
would i just be better of buying a cheap gsx or something and putting a 4G63 in it? cause with the new engine it will be like 0 milage right? also is there diferent between a rebuilt and a swap? also when u do those things is it like getting a brand new engine? so if someone can tell me please if it would be a better idea to buy a cheap 2g DSM with high miles as long as its cheap and then just putting in a new 4G63 :dsm: :dsm: :dsm: :dsm:

What are your goals with the DSM (i.e., build it for looks, speed, keeping it relatively stock)? What is your budget? Think about what you want first before you really search for a car. GST and GSX both have same engine. The big difference is GST is FWD and GSX is AWD car. You can invest in suspension mods (i.e., tires, shocks, LSD) and have good traction with little wheel spin on a GST, but it'll cost you $$$. Takes practice and timing to launch a FWD with minimal wheel spin or hop. AWD is great for drag racing and taking corners. Since you're just getting your license I'm assuming you're a teenager? I would pick a GSX if you can find one that's not beat on and reasonable price near bbk value. Insurance is cheaper for you if you drive a AWD car. Not sure how much cheaper though.

Rather than focus on the car's mileage, do a compression test and probably have a mechanic do a full car inspection on the vehicle to determine the car's overall health. Bringing a friend that knows DSMs is a big plus! I wish I had a experienced DSM friend help me inspect the car when I was purchasing my GST. Don't forget to do a carfax report to make sure the car has a clean title. Try to find a vehicle with little to no mods because you don't know if the owner did a hack job or the right way of installing the parts. If you're considering investing in a new motor if the car needs one why not upgrade the internals instead of getting a new stock motor? Just giving you some ideas. You'll love the DSM whether its a GSX or GST. Just remember to do all the maintenance before modding it, have a set of tools and a bottle of oil in the trunk in case of an emergency.

My 2 Cents

If you want a 2G don't worry about the year, you can always convert it later. Its not like the 95-96 is an ugly car. I gotta rep the 2Ga. But anyways the way I saw it when I was buying my car was that if I was going to get a FWD it was going to get the GST Spyder or else I was getting a GSX. I ended up getting a GST Spyder for the simple fact that its a droptop and it is SWEET in the spring and summer. But if a Spyder does not interest you do yourself a favor and get the GSX or you will be wishing you had later once your put some power under the hood.
As for me, I am modding until all I have is wheelspin then converting my Spyder to AWD. :thumb:
