2g deletes??

hey guys I'm in the process of tearing my transmission because the guy before me did not have any fluid in it and now i need a new one.. this is my first 2g gsx and i want to know what all i can delete in the engine bay and still keep as a DD and keep the check engine light off now do take in mind that I'm living in Montana (unfortunately) and i have no inspections or emissions i can look up how to do it all just would like to know pointers and things i can do since it will be down for a little while thank you for your input rock on dsmers

i think my engine bay looks pretty damn clean for a DSM. has a realwire tuck, not a fake one. master fuse box panel is relocated from the engine bay into the car and behind the glove box. underneith the fenders i have "thru-hull" fittings for boats to send rigging through a transum wall or something and its perfect water/weather tight. all the wiring is under the fenders and come into the car via the thru hull fittings. the engine bay is skip welded, shaved and repainted. full wire tuck as much as one can do on a dsm.

as far as the steering goes, if you ghetto style ditch the powersteering you sacrafice SO MUCH OF THE CARS LOW SPEED CORNERING. daily driving and goin slow through a parking lot sucks. the rack and pinion portion of the gear box has to be full blown taken apart and welded closed and have grease zerks installed at all the perfect spots and the steering box has to be homemade style converted to a manual rack. its alot of work. its possible to relocate the lines and make the powersteering lines be short route to a front mount oil cooler. the factory path of p/s hoses dont have to drape over the driverside shock tower

91stocker, please post picture of your clean engine bay. i looked in your profile you have no engine pics. i would love to see your p/s pump just backyard style removed andalso post a pic of your steering wheel please. im willing to bet the finish is rubbing off of it from you pulling on that heavy ass steering to park it in a tight parking spot

I dont mind the Alt up front. But I agree on the power steering. I in fact do the de powered mod from time to time for people. And the AC system is nearly 40lbs fully removed. You can also remove the charcoal canister under the battery tray. Just make sure whatever vacuum lines that come off of the intake tube or manifold get plugged and you will be golden! You can do nearly a full emissions delete with no check engine light. (maybe I was just lucky?)

My marine battery? Its an optima blue top, and them pictures were of my first car. Not of anything I currently own.

Ya, a optima blue top is a deep cycle, which is a boat battery. And either way, it didn't have a tie down or a rubber boot over hot post. Just sayin....

you can re-route the powersteering and keep it. it can be tucked for a clean look

how exactly did you get rid of that line?

To get rid of it you'd need to delete it.

To tuck it you'd have to find some where to make custom high pressure lines and reroute it.

As far as power steering goes, look at it this way. It may not look good on there, but do you spend more time looking at your engine bay, or more time driving your car? I am going to guess driving the car. If it is a daily driver keep the power steering, i would also recommend keeping the ac if your car still has it. Also you CAN in fact remove the egr valve, and evap system along with all the vacuum lines to them without throwing a check engine light. The trick is to leave the solenoids plugged into the harness.

De-powering the rack is really not that much of a pain, the hardest part is getting it out (since you have to drop the subframe) but I was going to buy a depowered rack for 150 and I'm so glad I did it myself took me about an hour and wasn't difficult at all

I wasn't knocking anyone's bay, i was just saying personally, looking at a clean bay with p/s is like looking at cindy crawford in the face. It might look good but all i notice is the mole.

Compressor will get u about 5lbs and lines maybe half a lb... If your that worried about 5lbs go on a diet

Ya the compressor isn't 5 lbs, more like 20-25. If you don't think that's worth removing, you obviously don't care about making your car all that much lighter. The only other thing you can remove and drop that much weight in one shot is a stock leather seat.

But I'm crazy about making it as light as possible too. Hell go on a diet to drop 5 lbs? I dropped 80+lbs and still removed every .5 gram worth of dust from under the carpet.

And when your talking about losing body weight to go faster, you can't get much more of a gain. I drop any more and I'll be a god damn stick, so on to dropping the 4-500 I can get out of the car.

And where I come from, .1 is .1 no matter how ya get it.

+1 for getting ecmlinkv3 and you can take care of those codes and delete pretty much anything you want to.

And I vote for keeping power steering. A/C- probly not, I didnt. But it's basic function of the car over looks. I enjoy driving my car without fighting the steering wheel.

Hey not to be rude. But guys this isn't bout weather or not i should keep power steering and if is better or not. I am interested in what i can delete in the bay to clean it up for a nice clean DD and as well as easier work space. If the thought of deleting it is good to you then just say it. i do appreciate everyones input though.

I did the emissions delete, moved the battery to the trunk, and did a coil on plug set up. It cleaned up the bay as far as making it easier to work in and routing the intake piping... I did it for practical reasons, not looks. It makes getting to the transmission and left side of the motor, especially under the throttle body, much easier. I also got a proportioning valve from the brake system of a GS without ABS and deleted the ABS system. My ABS system had never worked, and I didn't really want to mess with it, so I took it out. Lost some weight, and it makes getting the driver side headlight out and the fender off much easier. If you've ever had to take the driver side fender off, the ABS unit makes getting to the one bolt on the inside of the chassis really difficult. The lines comming off of it are right in the way, making getting a socket wrench in there impossible without dropping the unit too.

Just search taboo delete and you'll get all you need about emissions.

I've deleted ac (compressor, all lines, condenser, the unit in the heater core), moved my battery to the trunk, deleted all of cruise control, ditched the abs (ecu, relay, haven't yet removed the actual abs "controller" yet), removed air bags and ecu, removed all emissions, removed all now unneeded wiring, all interior sound deadener and insulation, rear wiper and defroster is long gone, and tcu. Pretty much anything not needed to move and stop. Hell even the wheel sensors for the abs are gone. After all that my dash was lit up like a Christmas tree so I pulled the cluster and deleted bulbs too!

Next on my list is power steering, abs module, and heater core.

Well then you won't be able to know when your check engine light is on for something serious. As i've already stated. If you leave the solenoids plugged in than you will not throw a cel.

I do not know how it is in Iowa but in Montana i wanna keep all the insulation in my car possible ha ha I'm just after my engine bay looking good and as well as making it efficient to work on. and i will eventually get ecmlink but right now I'm focused on getting it running and while I'm paying on my tranny and few other goodies i would like to tidy the bay up while it is apart.

Haha my thoughts exactly!

I scan for codes 1-2 times a week and typically a cel isn't gonna come on before something that catastrophic anyway. Sure works good for the simple stupid stuff, but when something serious is failing it usually don't throw a cel anyway.

Oh it's cold in Iowa! That's what bibs and carhart coats are for! Haha Na it gets real cold around here too, but I'll just pull out the yota when it gets that cold since the talon don't have heat anyway!

The biggest functional deletes you can do is the emissions "omission" and battery relocation. Those 2 really do free up a lot of space and make it easier to get things done. I have lived in Big Sky, and I would honestly suggest adding equivalent insulation to the amount of weight you lose. Not joking at all... It's f**kin cold up there!!!
