Whats up guys?

I have a problem on my hands, and not sure what the deal is here. I was given a job that I should of refused, because I knew it was gonna be a hack job.:toobad:

Background:
I was to put a motor into a 94 N/A Eclipse. The motor that I received was a 2g turbo block. I called the guy up and told him that this wasn't going to work like it should, he needed to get the correct block. The guys tells me he knows it will work, so do what I can.
He also wants me to not install a belt on the front balance shaft, because he heard that they have the potential to fail. I informed the guy that he is mis-informed, and the rear balance shaft fails due to bearing failure. He doesn't want to hear it.:ohdamn:

1st Problem:
I realize this car is a big HACK job. The driver side motor mount has had the bolt holes wallered out so they will line up, and the studs were bent to wards the head. WTF??:notgood:

2nd Problem:
I get the car together and start her up. She is running really smooth! All of a sudden the T-belt is slinging oil every where. I kill the car fast, and start pulling all the accessory belts off. I soon realized that I forgot to put a bolt in the oil pump housing that went to the front balance shaft tensioner. My bad...shit happeneds. I get that plugged up and wanted to make sure it wasn't going to leak, so I throw on the harmonic balancer and start her up again. This time no oil, so I put everything back together.:notgood:

Major problem:
I get everything put together, start her up. After a few I go wash my hands and go to the restroom while the car is running. I come back out and the car is pouring oil again, and making a weird sound (sounds like balance shaft bearing failure).:notgood:

Any idea's? I'm about ready to call this guy and tell him to come get is crap!!

He is right about the balance shafts, both have the tendency to fail. How did you eliminate the rear one? Did you cut the end off and weld it or did you get a kit?

Since he's probable paying you and you agreed to do the job, it's YOUR responsibility to finish the job. Things I would check:

1. Oil pan, check to make sure all bolts are installed and gasket isn't leaking.
2. Check the main seal, for leakage.
3. Try to narrow down where to noise is coming from.

Both balance shafts fail equally, so the customer was right in that regard.

I was given the long block. All I did was put all new gaskets, and put the n/a head on it.

He did not want me to eliminate the rear balance shaft. He simply told me to remove the belt for the front one. I tried to explain about the rear, and the BSE kit but he wasnt interested in what I had to say.

As for the oil, its comming from the front somewhere. I will have to tear it down to pin point it. I am going to try to tackel it today and see if I cant get is squared away.

Am I not making any sense??

The rear balance shaft that is run off the oil pump pulley is still there. The front balance shaft that has a belt that runs to the crank shaft just has the belt missing.

I seriously hate rigging shit up to work. I like to do things the right way, the first time so I don't have to worry about it.

I feel this thread is making me sound like a dumb ass!! I think I'm going to just get the guy to come get his car and get it out of my hair.

Gotcha,

Well iv'e heard of people running their cars like that, but its something i would never recommend nor ever do even if paid for it (they will hold you responsible)

Best thing to do is remove the oilpan and take a look... obviously for metal shavings from the bearings

someone please correct me if im wrong but you eaither have to have the balance shafts out or a belt.

I've heard people running them with the front still in and the belt off because you can't get that one out without pulling the motor. The back one is cut off or removed.

You can run it without the balance shaft belt but it will cause excessive vibration, probably even more than if you were to take the rear balance shaft out as well. Really I would run with a balance shaft belt or no balance shafts at all, there is no point of having one balance shaft turn while the other one sits there.

I just wanna clear up that I know for a fact its not a rod knock.

Back when I did work, you either let me do it the way I want it done or I didn't do it. It's too much liability in this lawyer-infested world.

I'd tell the kid either to let you do what needs to be done or it's not your problem anymore.

I figured I'd give you guys a heads up. The car is running good and out the door.

The oil leak was coming from behind the front balance shaft sprocket. The metal washer that is about 1/2" thick was missing. I didn't take the sprocket off, so it didn't even stand out to me that it was gone.

The noise I was hearing was caused by loose torque converter bolts. This is the result of hiring somebody to help me that is green when it comes to mechanics in general. I should of checked this first off.
