I know this is a common problem, but my 2g just started griding. Back info: One of the shifter bushing is missing and the shifter knob was loose. Would this cause or help cause the trans to start grinding during a shift?

Are my syncros completely worn?

More back info:
My car is a 2g GSX and the trans has about 100k with a rebuilt motor. I'll admit that I haven't changed the gear oil and I have had it for about 15k miles now. I dont know when the last owner changed the oil.

I ordered the shifter bushing and changed the gear oil. Will this problem magically go away.. What do you guys think. Any help is appreciated thank you.:)

it could help... good test to check synchros is too in nuetral with foot off clutch move shifter towards second gear... if car deaccels a litte means synchros are working... bushings wear out... rubber on shifter platform as well as the 2 on the trans under hood... i changed mine and it was a significant difference... it can always be a shifter cable/linkage problem but i believe that is less common then a synchro... if ## wanting to build then upgraded trans is always a good investment ;) goodluck

I fought my 1g with grind and shifting issues went through 6 trans to finally figure out im an idiot and my bushings were shot... haha should have researched more and for not doing so i paid a hefty price :/

I'm in the same boat as you are, but mine grinds from first to second. I replaced the shifter bushings on the outside and it made a big difference, but the actual grind is still there. I got my poly bushings for my shifter-plate yesterday, gonna slap em' on this weekend and see what happens. Also gonna change the gear oil since I haven't gotten to that either, and add a little Lucas in there while I'm at it. I'll get back to you if any of that makes it go away.

Did the grinds leave completely?? I had to switch my trans out. :( I used redline mt90 oil to see if it would help. It didn't so I had to get a new trans all together. Ended up selling the car two weeks after the new trans for a 1g. Oh well.. BUt yeah my syncros were bad. It got worse very quickly after the first time it started grinding..
