Hey all, I'm having a problem with my second gear in my 1G. Its completely stock. I bought the car knowing it had the problem but now that Im trying to sell it, it seems to turn everyone down on buying the car. I don't know exactly if its a synchro or what. I can tell you how it happens and maybe someone can figure it out LOL. Basically when I drive the car its fine, I dont beat on it and dont really speed all the time. When I do though, an I try to shift into second at high rpm's it grinds going it. To my knowledge the clutch has never been changed. I dont know if that can also be a problem, but I dont have the same problem in other gears. JUST SECOND!? LOL Iv noticed that after the car warms up and Im not speeding im just driving casually it doesnt grind at all, but if i do still drive slow and shift into second too fast it grinds going in. It does not pop out or make a thump, just grinds. Should I replace the clutch? play with the pedal? Replace the trans fluid? im lost here guys....any help would be great. Im also on a budget.

Sounds like a bad synchro...this is common with DSMs....I have NEVER been in a DSM with stock transmission in which 2nd gear did not grind.

Try changing the trans fluid first. You can use mobile1 80w-90 or synchromesh if you feel like spending a bit more money. But put the new stuff in, drive it for maybe 5-10 miles, then drain it and re-fill it again. If the fluid thats draining is still a gross color, you may have to do this process a few more times. Shift slow into second to avoid grinding more of the synchro too. Hope this helps a bit :)

Yeah ive defintely been wanting to drain the trans fluid and see if maybe POSSIBLy that would be the problem....more hopeful than anything LOL. Thank you for your reply! :)

I was having the same problem, until I changed the shift linkage bushings. When I pulled the one out, it was already worn out to the point where it came out in pieces. I would recomend to pull them out and check, if they are worn any bushing replacement will help.

I was skeptical, but hadn't pulled them out. So I gambled on the $15 dollar ones from JNZ tuning, and haven't grinded once since.
