I just bought a 97eclipse gst not long ago. figure out it have squeaky noices so I check and it turn out to be the alternator belt. Went and bought a new belt to replace it. when I took the old belt out.. it only have 3 tooths left..(suppose to have 4) so one got shreded some how.. but when I put the new belt in. it run fine a while until like last night it started to squeak again. and I check it this morning 1 of the belt tooth got eating up also.. now it pretty much squeakin like crazy for awhile when i turn on the car...

Is this a common problem for 2g eclipse ? is there any special way that I have to put the belt on or something? or do I have to do any modification? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

Check the pulley on the alternator - count the ribs on the pulley & see if it has ths same number of ribs as the water pump pulley (should have 4). If the previous owner replaced the alternator & didn`t check if it had the correct pulley with the correct # of ribs, this is your problem . . . :talon:

everything look stock and all have the same # of ribs. I forgot to mention that when I bought the belt (stock) I kindda measure it and for some reason the new belt is a little bit longer than the old one so when I put it on and push the alternator all the way back there still a little bit loose. could this also be the problem?

Yes.

When you say "I put it on and push the alternator all the way back" and it's still loose, do you mean pulling the alt towards the radiator, or pushing it towards the engine?

Here's the short version: Install the new belt, and with the hinge bolt and both tension adjuster bolts loose, pull the alternator towards the radiator until you have the tension about right. Then use the long bolt to fine adjust the belt, and the bolt perpendicular to that one (which screws into the alt housing) to lock it in place. Tighten the hinge bolt and you should be good. If it's still loose, and it's adjusted all the way out towards the radiator, then you have a belt that's too long.

I just went through this earlier this week, and had pry the alt away from the engine while tightening the adjuster to get it to stop squealing. I may still end up getting a shorter belt once the weather warms up.

If that doesnt work check the pulley run out with a ruler going from the top rib of one pulley to the other and see if it lines up.
