92awddsm's pics convinced me it is a turbo bearing. But what was causing the knocking noise? Maybe the turbo bearing caused more damage?

Defintely a turbo bearing, had the same problem myself. And so did a fellow dsmer with a 2g.

Blew up my t-25, horrible shaft play. I then replaced the turbo with a new one, drove around for 15,000 miles, and then developed rod knock. I dropped the oil pan and found piecs of the thrust bearing and the bearing pictured in this thread, not to mention thousands of little shavings from when the bearing was going.

Well, I finally pulled my engine and completed the break down over the weekend. Wanted to let everyone know that I confirmed the problem.

The mystery bearing in my oil pan was part of a turbo bearing. My turbo is fine, no shaft play and spins freely. The parts in my oil pan were from my original T-25 turbo which blew a while back.

As everyone knows, I did have a strange knocking noise in my engine and also found a lot of metal shavings in my oil pan. This was due to my rear balancer bearing going out. Just before I took off the front case I could barely turn the oil pump sprocket by hand.

Well I guess I should just build the bottom end and get it over with since everything is out of the car. Maybe I'll be able to drive it more next summer.
