I just ordered new 245/40/17 tires and I'm going to try and see how they fit on some 17x7 wheels I have already have (38 offset).

I know I should be running 8" wide wheels with these tires but its only temp until I get some more dough to purchase some 17x8 RPF1 wheels.

According to this table, my 7's might be okay for now:
Commonly Available Tire Sizes
Minimum wheel width is 70% of tire width, maximum wheel width is 100% of tire width
The tires are 9.9" wide.

I'd like to get some input from others before I go ahead and mount them or if its wrong with that much bulge on the side. Again, its only temp for 2-3 months.

Minimum wheel width being 70% of the tire's width depends on the tire profile, and a 40 series tire is pretty low profile so I would think that it would be higher, maybe 80-85%, but that is just a guess.

I have 225/45/17 on 8" rims and they are pretty equal in width.

I dunno, I probably wouldn't do it, but then again I can't really see anything seriously wrong with it either...

On my 99 I have 235/45/17 on 7" wide wheels and it almost looks flush to the rim. I guess I can get them mounted and see how it looks. Right now my 95 has some ugly 16" AR wheels with corded/cracked tires and thats what I'm putting the 245/40 tires on.

Go for it. So what if the tire bulges a little bit...Isnt going to hurt anything

The rims on our camaro are designed for like 235 tires and we are rockin 275's on the back, LOL.

With my Typhoon, I have 275's on the front and 315's on the back. No rub. :) Of coarse the wheels are 9" front and 11" back.

I'm running 235 wide on my 17x8 and 255 on my 17x9 wheels. I'm not sure if it will fit very well.

Just curious- if you're just doing it for temp, why not just wait til you get the wheels you will originally put them on? Then you don't have to pay an extra balance/ mount/ dismount fee?

If you saw the current tires and how bad they are, you would see why I need to get new tires. 2 have cords coming out, all 4 are dry rotted, and one has a huge plug in the side from it cracking. They are not safe to drive anywhere. I want to sell the 16" wheels and put the new 245 tires on the 7" wheels. It was either buy new 17" tires or buy new 16" tires. I'm already running 235/45/17 tires 17x7 wheels which are my other GSX and no problems there. They don't seam to bulge at all.

Understandable. I had to swap my 5zigens on the silver car since the chords were showing in the rear tires. Hopefully the tax rebate thing will come soon so I can get new tires on the BBS's.

Hopefully then that will fit for you. I guess if you check out tirerack.com you can look up the tire brand and see what size rims it'll fit on.
