calgary,
#1. I used to have sony components in my front door panels, but I replaced them with Rockford coaxials. The tweeter for the sony is disconnected, and its too much of a bi*** to remove so I'm just leaving it in. If I just splice the tweeter wire with the coaxial, thus having 2 speakers in each door panel, will the tweeter just act as a normal speaker? Will this be a bigger drain on my power and increase distortion?

#2. My 4 channel amp blew, and now I only have 2 channels so I have to run wire from the trunk to the deck for the rear speakers. Will normal speaker wire be fine for running the wire or should I buy some insulated thicker cables?

It's like this. Your deck is a 4 channel by let's say 40 watt? So to each channel it's 40 watts. If you split that channel hence splicing the wire, it's my understanding since it's now powering 2 speakers the signal is not as strong (not sure if it's exactly cut in 1/2...20 watts to each speaker) so both speakers suffer, correct? I know we have some audio gurus here. As far as power drain, of course it'll increase some, is it going to kill your alternator or battery? No. If you're running wire from an amp, I always say use better/insulated than just run of the mill speaker wire. You'll be happy later on. Less "noise". Not so sure about insulating wire yourself, guess it could be done.:thumb:

It would seem that it would decrease the amount of power going to the two speakers compared to the one... But really it could make it the same. As you parrallel (sp?) the two speakers, the ohm load (resistance) is lowered. Thus more power will be sent b/c of the less work it has to do to accomplish the same goal. Yes, there may not be the full amount going to each speaker, but it will be higher than if you series them together and increased the ohms.

Also you will want to use a crossover to keep the mids and lows from going through the tweeters.

Think of your speakers as resistors. If you wire 2 speakers in parallel, you will have half the resistance. If you wire them in series, 2 times the resistance. Your deck is MADE to handle a certain amt of resistance, with too little, there is too much current going through those channels. This is bad and this is why for subs, you have to buy amps that are sometimes stable down to 1 ohm depending on how many subs you are hooking up as to not blow out the amp. Your deck works this same way. Not a good idea to mess with that.

Also, your tweeter is only made to handle certain frequencies, and by hooking it up as a normal speaker without the crossover inline, this is also bad.

You could get a seperate amp for one or the other if the tweeter functionality is that important to you, otherwise I would leave them disconnected.

It sounds like you are wiring the rear mount speakers straight to the deck. In that case, no you do not NEED thicker or more insulated wire. Just be sure that you dont run the in-put from the deck or any out-put from the amp wires anywhere near any type of power wire. doing so is what causes the"buzz". Try to remember it this way, no speaker wire of any kind ever, runs anywhere near any type of power current. That includes any power supply for an amp, power windows, power antenna, ect. It soundslike your going for the quik fix crutch till you get a new amp or have tht old one fixed. This is what I would do.:thumb:
