So i got a GS-t. Finally satisfying my need for spool. I was driving it home from tennesse. I live in Lake Charles. About 500 miles into the trip, i had a major problem. The car sounded like a go cart, it felt like it was bogging out, and it was literally shooting sparks and blue flames out of the exhaust. If i let it chill for a bit, then drove it, it would not do it for a mile or two, but then start again...

WHAT THE HELL DO I DO?

Will do ((=

So my check list for the upcoming days.
1. check for ICP leaks.
2. chance plugs and wires.
3. better fuel.
4. reset my ECU.
5. check my WG.

i'll post results as i get things done....

1. Not just check your ICP. Do a BLT. Get at least 20psi and make it hold for at elast 30 seconds.
2. NGK BPR7ES plugs gapped to 0.028" ONLY. Wires at your discretion.
3. Shouldn't even be said. It says PREMIUM UNLEADED FUEL ONLY on your speedometer for a reason.
4. Doesn't need to be done. Will cause stumbling, idling issues, and stalls for the first hour of driving or so.
5. 15psi max on stock turbo and fuel system. Turbo is at it's max efficiency range here and fuel system can't supply any more.

Throwing out embers? Your cat (meow) is toast.

When the CEL goes on, the code will be stored. Just hit it with the code reader and see what you get.

Home depot boost leak tester FTW.

Jesus christ, my car has never seen anything but 87 octane and it's never shot flames out the back. The engine senses the knock, and pulls the timing. I've done it in every turbo car I've owned and it's been fine at stock boost levels. I would never advise it for maximum performance, but we're trying to figure out why he's got flames coming from his exhaust and running like a go-kart.

You could gut the cat. People do that to look like they are complying to emissions laws.

You have an external WG, do you have a stock turbo? Is the funky running only when you get into boost? If it is, take the spring out of the WG completely and run the car with no boost and see what happens. Your list looks good, you should be doing those things even if you aren't having problems.

Okay, so it seems one of the reasons im running around shooting fireworks out my pipe could be the cat. It's just funny because if when i let the car chill the night it started, it would stop for a little bit, then start again....

Yes I'm pretty sure its a 14b (6 bolt) with an external WG, but it was doing all this, OUT of boost....

holy crap lot of replies LOL. i would do a compression test you said you had blue smoke usually thats a ring issue. as stated above 87 octane is a big no no when you change your plugs get ngks same with wires an easy way to find out if its your cat is to run the car at night and see if gets hot enough to change to a red or orange color also before it starts to shot flames and run like crap hows it boost? does it sound like all 4 cyclinders are running?

The night it started doing all this it ran great for over 6 hours nonstop. Then 500 miles into the trip it started sounding like a go cart. Almost like only two cylinders were working. Everytime I would stop for 10-15 minutes to let it have a breather, it would run fine for a few miles, then start sounding like crap again. I just drove the car and it ran fine this time. I took it to advanced auto and ran the CEL diagnostic. It gave me an O2 heat sensor malf, and random cylinder mis.

The boost is fine, but it keeps going over 20psi of boost on a stock turbo with no controller...Im going to have to check the spring in the WG to see what its set to...

Also a guy that works at a local dealership suggested the cause of the flames might be the bearings in the turbo going out?

i dont believe that at all. i drove an old conquest with 145000 from upstate NY to las vegas with no problems. talk about strian. i had tons of stuff in it as well.

1 if car is idle does the engine sound ruff.
2 is it easy to unbolt the cat back from the car? see if it is tossing stuff out of there.
3 maybe carbon buildup being released and hitting the cat.
4 clogged cat.

do the easy checks first. dont tear it all apart off the bat. eliminate things you test one at a time. see if someone local on here can give you a hand.

also if DSM link is tuned i dont think you would want to reset it unless you have a way to reset all the settings.

The car sounds fine at idle. I dont have work tomorrow so I plan on jumping in and eliminating alot of these things. Check back about this time tomorrow and I should have some kind of update on these problems...

i would run it tonight when it gets dark out like i said if the cat is cloged it should be a cherry red also when it acts like its running on 2 cyclinders take the wires out one by one and see if changes check all your connects by the maf maybe change your air filter while your at it. wow i just was looking at one of your presious posts. let me get this stright your cars pushing more then 20psi on 87 octane gas? that thing has to be kncoking and pulling timing like crazy not to metion you def do not have the fuel for that much boost on a stock fuel system. stock fuel system is 14psi MAX with a logger...i would do a compression test. this is a stock wastegate right? eaither the arm is not working or you are creeping. turbo back exhaust? if you have a turbo back exhaust that may be the problem for the creeping. if not i and the wg is working correctly checking your timing with a light. if its off a tooth or two that will do it also

yeah the car was shooting up some numbers for the psi. I knew it was way too much for stock. I know when it gets to high boost it feels and sounded like the car was choking, my thinking is lack of fuel for such a high boost...

So update.
Today I went and got my NGK plugs and wires. Before I installed them i thought, hey why not drive it around the block to see if the cat gets hot like said. So as i was driving i kept the boost super low. All of a sudden, a very wierd noise and now i cannot accelerate over 2k rpm. Im guessing this is a major problem. When i had ran the CEL codes it said it had a random cylinder misfire, could it just be fouled plugs?

Stop messing around. Fill it up with 93 octane already if you haven't. Install the wires, gap the plugs to .028, fix boost leaks. Once those things are complete, we'll proceed from there. At the rate you're going, you'll be asking more and more questions before eliminating them.

yeah if you changed the plugs like you were going to you would know your own answer insted of asking another questions. do the things metioned above untill then dont waste everyones time with trying to help you and you not lisening

HEY HEY HEY, actually I was in the process of solving the problem. Lets not start getting angry. I actually made a ton of progress today and eliminated a ton thanks to you guys' help. I installed the plugs and wires and filled the remaining of the tank with 93, and got rid of the "go cart sound". That wierd noise i heard earlier was from the rubber coupling on the j-pipe coming off due to the fact that the clamp was not tight enough. Everything was fixed but the embers and im 90% positive thats from a clogged cat.

My next question. Should i just get another cat, or use a straight pipe in its place?
