:talon: okay, heres the thing.... i have a 92 talon tsi awd. 50,000 or so on rebuilt 4g63....14b turbo with basic bolts ons and boost gauge. its been acting a little sluggish and it keeps getting worse...used to get full boost at 3-4000, no boost controller. the timing was advanced for a 16g turbo, but when the 14b was put back on timing wasnt adjusted. so today i adjusted the timing to 8 and im just not getting much boost at all in first gear, turbo doesnt spool up til 4500 and its only 5 psi before i have to shift. 2nd and up is fine...full boost at about 4-4500. im not sure what it could be...timing is set, fresh tune up.
i noticed the white marks on the came gears arent lined up directly beside each other, they are both pointing right thought it might be 180 out....but that would mean bent valves right? any help would be greatly appreciated.

i noticed the pins on the cam gears are both pointing up, shouldnt the exhaust be down and the intake up??....thanks...

5 is base timing...actual is 8?? i thought it was a boost leak too...but i removed all the, intake, piping intercooler wastegate, cleaned everything up and reinstalled it and there were no leaks that i could find...also, i have a 255 walbro....with stock injectors and its running rich....could that be part of the problem???

What exactly do you mean by actual?

Timing should be set at 5BTDC, or couple degrees lower if having serious knock problems that can't be tuned out with fuel.

If you by 'actual' timing you refer to total timing advance, then it would be 5BTDC + current value from ECU's timing map.(You need a loger to see that).
No matter how you look at it, there is ABSOLUTELY no reason to reset your base timing for 14b/16g or any other turbo.

As for lag, make sure you don't knock and check intake and exhaust for leaks.

Do a boost leak test, it will find you some leaks I'm sure. Taking off the pipes and cleaning and reconnecting them doesn't do it.

The Cam sprockets have a pointer on both sides. With the dowel pins at 12o'clock the pointers should be aligned at 3 and 6 o'clock (e.g. facing each other) and the Crank pulley timing mark should be at TDC.

I has a similar problem once where my crank sprocket was one tooth off and was laggy as hell with my small 16G. In addition to the above, I set a long screwdriver in my #1 plug hole and rotated the crank until it was at peak height (absolute TDC). If the timing marks are off at that point, the T-Belt is not on correctly.

As also mentioned, boost leaks, wastegate actuator not correctly adjusted, incorrectly set base timing or an exhaust leak pre-turbo all would contribute to slow spoolup :dsm:
