okay so i just recently (2 days ago) installed a 14b in my 2g and now it wont hit boost until around 3500rpm. what would cause this? a boost leak somewhere (my lower intercooler pipe is horribly ghetto rigged)? thanks for any comments

Yes, It's almost certain boost leak, or a partial opened WG. If it's ghetto rigged that won't help anything. Also my EVO spools around 2500 or so. Maybe a little more.

14b lag is an oxymoron LOL. Check your wastegate flapper run boost leaks check for any kinda smoke which might show signs of a shot turbo. Those are just a couple things you could do, and by the way what do you mean by ghetto rigged as long as it's pipe with a t-bolt clamp or at least a semi descent clamp you should be ok.

Ride in a car that has a T70 and you'll know the meaning of lag, but I do hear you but even with those mods you should still see boost pretty dam quick unless you went 3" IC piping and long routed it. and hks 272's on a turbo that's effective range isn't even up where 272's benefit is kinda beyond me. that 14b even with the stuff your talkin about will dye off after like 6500 which is where a set of hks 264's is rated to. This I know because my ported and even clipped 14b would not pull past that.

I have 1bar on my 14b (external gate, extremely ported turbine housing) with six bolt & 2g pistons right around 2300rpm, more or less.

14b and "3k+" don't even make sense on the low-comp 1g pistons. WTF

my ghetto rigged pipe was made up like so: i had my 14b with a stock 1g j pipe and stock 95 licp. this left a gap about 8 inches or so. All i had in my car was a 2 1/4" piece of 45 degree bent pipe and a coupler with worm clamps. one clamp was significantly longer than the other, so i snaked the pipe into the stock licp, put the coupler on the new pipe and connected it to the j pipe. since one clamp was so long i was able to tighten the 2 1/4" coupler to fit the 1 3/4" j pipe...so my guess is there is a leak there where all the extra coupler is. i could be wrong but thats what my guess is. oh and another stupid thing, i was driving down the highway when i hear a thunk thunk thunk. i get home and two of my manifold to turbo bolts had broken at their heads. someone must have overtightend them to the point that the heat caused them to break or something. i dont believe the turbo is shot, it had no shaft play at all and spun pretty nicely. i dunno, well see. might have to drop some money i dont have on a 16g :p

i'll have to check the wg later. as for smoke, its going to be a while before i can tell if it is or not, cause i am still spewing smoke from oil that my dead t25 left in my system...
btw what would be the correct way to check the wastegate?

A cracked turbine housing (which is very common on them) will cause slower spool-up and the turbo could still have no shaft play. It could also be things like exhaust/boost leaks though.

Believe me, I know. The only reason I'm running the 272s is because they were already in the engine when I got it. My original plan was to run the 14b with stock cams and then put cams in when I upgraded turbos. My dyno is about the weakest top end you'll ever see from 272s, pretty much falls off like a rock right where they should start to sing. ;)
