Dunnville,
Hi everyone

I got a wierd problem after i installed my second cd deck in my 92 laser. Ill try to make this as clear as possible so here it is. I have a green/white stripe-headlight illumination wire, a black/yellow stripe-light dimmer/guage wire. My new JVC deck has an orange/white stripe illumination wire, im pretty shure u hook this wire up to your cars dimmer wire to dim the deck face when you dim your interior lights.

Now i have no interior lights and no guage lights. The only time i have interior lights is when i open my hatch, but when it is closed i have nothing, even with my doors open. I checked all fuses and they are fine, i pulled out the 10A room fuse and when i put it back in my interior lights came on and my deck came on for a split second then went off and my lights faded off, pulled it out again and back in, nothing happened.

I tried connecting the light dimmer/guage wire to the ACC wire of my car, with the key in ACC position my guages are on, if i try to turn my headlights on the guages go out headlights off guages are back on, as soon as i put the key to ON the guages go off when the headlights come on. If i connect the headlight illumination wire to the ACC wire of deck, the decks screen dims guages go out.

I tried every possible way of connecting the light dimmer, headlight illumination, and deck illumination with or without the ACC and Power wires and i still cannot get the interior lights to work or my guages staying on.

Ive also noticed a wierd "CLICK" sound that i hear when i turn my key off or pull it out. it seems to be coming from somewhere within the radio compartment. I think this might be a circuit protect or something of that nature.

I have no idea what this problem could be and i checked every fuse even in engine bay. I never had this problem with my old deck, but my old deck never had an orange/white stripe-illumination wire on it. If someone had this problem or needs any more information from me to diagnos this problem please ask, ill try anything at this point. i have no cash to take it to an electronics place and im hoping this is something i can fix. Your help is greatly appreciated. thanks

common guys, can anyone atleast tell me what that click sound is i hear about 6 seconds after i turn my key off? sounds like its from the ecu?

This is your first and only warning about bumping.

Instead of not even waiting 24hrs for a response, why not use the handy SEARCH function to peek around?

a little off topic, but can you tell me what wires you have to turn ur deck on?? mine won't even turn on, :(. fyi i have instlled decks with the illumination not plugged in .

hello again- to OUTSITED - I dont really understand what u mean but heres my wiring, red/black stripe to yellow battery, blue to red acc, connected ground to bolt i found above ECU, and i left my illumination disconnected for now until i figure out how to get lights and guages again. is this what u need?

to STEVE- so this means i can test it or my relay is shot and i will have to go to a wreckers and rip one out of another laser/talon. i did a search and seen a reply u did describing where the MPI relay is and what it looks like,, ill take it out tomarow morning and check it out. any more good advice? LOL thanks man

Well one good question is did u get the wiring harness for your car or are you attempting to match it all up to the best of your knowledge straight from the stereo to the cut wires? If you have a wiring harness, then it as well as the cd deck come with a wiring diagram. Take them both out and just match wires to wires. If that doesn't solve your problem you might have a fuse in the cd deck or on the outside that has blown and is wreaking havoc on your electrical system.

How about you disconnect and restore to original condition all that you just did and see if everything works normal. I fear you have tapped into a bulb check circuit which is not the same as a ground though they frequently will be black.

I believe the green w/white trace is instrument illumination or parking lights. Let's hope you didn't smoke anything in the process of sticking wires without knowing where they go.

Cheers,

When i bought my car a while back The wires on my car are cut, no factory harness, however i still had the factory harness and decided to disconnect my cd deck and install the stock radio to see if i would get lights and guages. but still nuthing radio works fine but my interior lights/guages are still off. only time i get interiors is when my hatch is open or i pull the 10a room fuse and put it back in,, they just light right up and dim out, does anyone know what i connect my green/white stripe-headlight illumination wire to and my black/yellow stripe-light dimmer/guage wire? to ACC? to POWER? what do you other guys have your two wires connected to?

cause ive played around with wires already without any deck or radio in and no matter what sequence i have them hooked up in i cant get my lights even on or my guages to stay on after i turn my key from acc to on position. ive checked and double checked every fuse and fusable link. this click from that MPI relay is bugging me tho, if its stayed on before it hasnt clicked because this is a new noise she is makin and i think it has something to do with my lights staying out. now when i had no decks in my car the wires were just hangin,, it was probably possible to have the light dimmer / or the headlight illumination wire to touch metal and ground out. i thought one of them grounding would just blow a fuse? but this isnt the case, something else must of went.

thanks for the good info guys, gettin closer to figuring this one out LOL

Depending on what the HU is expecting, the HU dimmer wire would go to one or the other.
Most modern HU have displays that are always lit up rather than light bulbs to back light the radio. They typically want the Orange wire from the HU connected to the Green/White taillight circuit so that they see +12v when the parking lights are on and dim the display. The Black/Yellow dimmer wire is usually unused.

hey steve, tonight when i get home i will disconnect the stock radio and connect my jvc deck up with the illumination off the deck to the headlight/illumination wire from the car and ill tell u what happens. thanks

i tool a pic of my MPI relay but the file was too big, its basically a small gold box with the mitsubishi symbol and E8TO7O71 at the top and a different sequence of numbers/letters on the bottom, different for all models cause i took one out a 91 auto n/t laser and a 92 talon turbo 5 spd both same box just diff second case letters.

hey, i hooked up the deck just like u said, i still have no interior lights and no guages but a funny thing happened. when i turn my key to ACC the deck comes on bright screen, now when i turn my key into the ON position the deck dims. when i turn my key back to ACC deck lights up bright again and in 6 seconds that MPI relay clicks, i turn my key off, no click. im gettin more confused LOL but i got patience.

hello again, another funny thing happened when i tried to hook up a toggle switch to control my guage lights. i had it so i can control them manually, better than no lights at all. When i flick the switch on the guages light up, when i turn my key to ON the guages go off, if i turn the toggle switch off the guages come on. funny stuff. but i got it working now so i can leave the switch off and only have my lights come on when i turn my headlights on. as for the interior lights i bought 10 blue led's off ebay and i will wire them up around my interior for lighting. thats all i can do with for now so thanks for the help guys. this cars got a mind of its own LOL. cheers

Do the interior lights ever come on when the rear hatch is opened? So you have no interior decay setting?

I'm back to thinking the bulb test unit may have died. If you have a Pick Your Part type wrecking near you, see if you can bag one for $5. You know you just love your car, were it not for these things it wouldn't be YOURS and you would be bored stiff. :)

Cheers,

hmm, a bulb test unit ? i do only have interiors when my hatch is opened and i fixed the guage problem so that narrows it down eh. ive never heard of one of these before so it gives me hope on getting my factory interiors back. LOL. i got a friend who runs a wreckers 20 mins away and hes a cool guy. lets me take whatever i want from the cars there and hes reasonable. plus hes the only guy with 3 talons, 4 lasers and 2 eclipses around here. what does this bulb test unit look like and where is it located? that question is all thats stoppin me from goin. thanks man

I know nothing!!! Never saw one on a DSM, only know that it exists. You will have to look in a manual or ask someone who knows. More than likely it's under the dash and will have a good number of wires running into it maybe the size of a pack of cigarettes. It's the device that is responsible for checking all your lights, door open, seat belts etc. when you turn the key to on. I don't think it's part of the ECU which has it's own tests to perform nor do I know how that is conducted... first the bulb chk module then the ECU or the other way around or simultaneously.

This all started when you went into the Radio / CD player wiring job. Besides the ECU it's the most complicated electronic logic on most cars and has probably caused the most grief when people hook a wire up to some part of it's circuit. It uses a floating ground system which means that at one moment a wire could be positive and the next it could be negative. Your door switches are tied into this to tell you the driver if a door is not properly closed though I doubt that it monitors the actual interior bulbs. Do you have the automatic seat belts... those too may be a clue if something is wrong.

Cheers,
GTM

i dont have power seatbelts, locks or windows. the only thing power on my car is the mirrors, and they work fine LOL. i found a small black box just under where the radio sits, has the brand DENSO on it with a bunch of numbers n stuff. i looked at what wires ran into this device and they are all green. like green/red striped, green yellow, or solid green a good 14-18 wires go into it. i couldnt really find the green/white stripe ilumintaion wire running but ill check again later. i have to rip my dash apart today anyways so i can plan out where to run the wires and glue in my led's in the vents, etc. i will check around for that green/white wire tho.

when i make my way to the wreckers i will just pull out the ecu, that black denso box, and any other box thingy i find while taking apart my car today. I have faith that this black box might be the answer, but its probly somethin different so my car can screw with my head once again, LOL. so i will update after i go to the wreckers and pull evrything electronic out of this n/t 5 spd 93 talon i seen sittin there last time i went. once this damned problem is fixed ill post pics of what box/ boxes fixed it LOL. thanks again!
