Have you been able to make any progress on it yet?

I really want to lower my under hood temps....man these things get hot!

yes they definitely do. the 1st gens get way too damn hot.... and i have a 4G37

sorry its been so long since my last update, I've ebeen rather busy...anyway I am just posting to let you guys know its under way....

No kidding, if I run my car hard for a while, and let it cool down properly and everything before shutting it off, I can come back out like a half hour later and it still feels like an oven under the hood.

ok, an update for those who still care(if anyone) my aluminum mock-up with a fiberglass overlay just wasnt working, so I am currently in the process of remaking the mock up out of sheet metal instead(much better firmness, the aluminum and fiberglass was just too weak to stand up to the air flow that will be pushing down on the hood, maybe I just didnt use enough fiberglass, I dont know, but it seemed too weak to me unless I did like a whole 7 or 8 layers of the stuff, but that gets real expensive real fast) anyway, for this first hood, it is only minorly functional...the only part of the hood that I de-skinned was the bump, the bump brace is still there, but the skin itself is gone, leaving a big hole in the hood, enough for at least some(hopefully a lot) of the engine heat to escape, though not as much as the final product will, anyway I am remaking the mock up out of 24 gauge sheet metal(the same gauge they use for body panels on cars) which by the time its done will add about 15 pounds to the hood(at least thats over the front wheels though) anyway, this first hood I am making is not going to be the final product, its more of a test run, and to give me a mold on which to base the fiberglass, I will be using fiberglass on the later hoods, just not on this first one, I think about 5 layers of fiberglass with some ample bracing will give the hood enough rigidity to stand up to winds up to about 150 MPH, but I dont know, thats an estimate, could be less, could be more.....but I would have to find a car capable of going that fast to test it anyway, but all this blather is beside the point, just wanted to let you guys know that progress on the hood goes on and is looking good, I'll get some pics up when I buy a camera on monday(and after I develop the film) and when I get it finished I plan on doing a front end conversion to my 91 laser, giving it a 92+ front end(with a little custom work on the front bumper, I'll get a picture of how that project is going as well)

Ok, on The Fast And The Furious there was a hood on that Black S2000. Its kinda roundish but it would be great for an ET Exhaust. They have one for a 2G, lemme find a pic.....

Just have it designed to where the hump wraps around the cam gears and gives enough space for play and engine/hood movement. All the air comming from the front end can be custom directed to flow directly into the engine compartment with hoses....

easier said than done I think for that particular hood, dont get me wrong, it looks great, but the vent itself extends down too far, it would interfere with the cam cover....if I made it shallower than the picture then it just might work, still a close call, but workable, tell you what, after I finish this hood I am working on now(the evo hood) I'll give that one a shot since I will have a spare hood to mess with and plenty of fiberglass left over, but in any case, it will be much less effective than the evo hood in dissipating heat, those openings are tiny(though if I make the hood I will enlarge them a bit)....the ones on my hood are rather large, they would get rid of almost all of the heat, the only thing I dont like about that hood is that the vents are placed too far back from the exhaust manifold to really get rid of a lot of heat, still a cool looking hood though....I'll make one for the hell of it(though I cant stand CF hoods, only for the reason that they dont match the rest of the car)

Hey all... I am new on this forum... been tuning my 90 eclipse gs-t for about 2 years now... (little slow due to cash problems). I haev already modified my hood. I called a few friends up and we made one outta a junk hood i had laying around. But since we've modified the good one on the car and are continuing to modify it for better performance gain. here's a pic for you....

pretty neat modification, but the evo hood is a bit more extensive.....though your idea looks like it would work well for a ram-air application, tomorrow I'm getting a camera guys, so I should have pictures within a week

For what it's worth:

I agree the EVO type is probably the most effective. Another forward-facing hole in the front of the car is kinda pointless. It's better IMO to take advantage of the open space in front of the engine and below the turbo/exhaust. There's quite a bit of opening around the bottom of the engine bay, so you real concern is venting the hot air in the bay.

If you insist upon the idea of an "intake" scoop, may I suggest the NACA style (seen on the sides of Stealth/3000GT's. You can see a design here.

NACA application

NACA was a precursor to NASA and reflected the agency's emphasis on areonautics. The design I'm showing you is the lowest-drag intake NACA developed after a lot of reseach. The page includes measurements.

If reading flow engineering papers gets you going, then you may want to look over the web server for all thier papers, which will allow you to search things like "low drag" "intake", etc.

very good stuff there laserCool, but in short....using an evo-style power vent would have the same effect as that scoop, but anyway as far as progress on the hood goes I have finished remaking my mock-up in sheet metal and am in the process of making braces and I am getting ready to bond the mock-up to the hood, thinking of using JB Weld to bond the metal to the metal of the hood, then going over that with bondo to smooth the curve to what I want(with an intermediate layer of clay so I dont have to use so much bondo and because I have found a type of clay that once coated with bondo makes a very good surface, very durable too, and it helps with the bonding, anyway, tomorrow I go back to work on it

wouldn't it be easier to just take an EVO style hood, cut out the vents, and then weld them into the spot you want on the dsm hood

it would be about the same price total

what about just moding the hump?

something kinda like this? After I get my cars engine rebuilt im going to look for a hood to try this too. (suck if it rains though) unless i made a plug like thing for the intake vent.

no, its not easier to mod an evo-style hood for several reasons...the most obvious is that here in america we have trouble finding Evo hoods....and for another reason...the evo hood is made for the evo....even if I did as you suggest, it would still interfere with the all important cam cover, evo hoods are not raised nearly as high as the bump on a DSM, so if I wanted it to fit I would have to raise the center part of the hood, and since I am already doing that...why in the world would I pay out the nose to get an evo hood...the whole point of this project is not to cost me hundreds upon hundreds of dollars

yep, already taken five or six pictures....just have to get the film developed

I've been kicking around this idea too, a new hood.... I REALLY like the blister where the cam gears go, and want to retain that look... so what I may try is to get a hood from another 1g, and cut the blister out of it... put it on the passenger side... across from the existing blister... then cutting a frenched hole in the front of each blister... covering it with some cool mesh... fixing up some kind of ram air on the pass side blister... and then just use the frenched hole on the drivers side to cool the engine.. (man it gets hot in there!) Possibly working something out for exhaust up near the windshield...

I think that 2 bulge idea sounds badass! IMO that would look so aggressive and still be functional. I would definitely buy one of those.

IF I do this, I'll post pics...

It means painting my car... so it is a big project.

Thanks for the encouragement!
