1g torque converter won't unlock

94 eclipse automatic tranny. engine dies when put in gear, forward or reverse. When I unplug the tcu, it will Idle while in gear, but it will only run in 3rd gear when I do that. with the tcu plugged in, I put it in neutral, coasted, and while it coasted forward, I put it in gear and it went, but when you slow down, or stop, so does the engine. Open for suggestions please.

It sounds like you might have a problem with the torque converter clutch (TCC). It will lock up when driving and then it is supposed to unlock when you come to a stop. So it sounds like this is what you are explaining. I can't tell you exactly what to check so you might have to research, but it could be in the TCC circuit somewhere so check that out.
