1G Thermal Expansion Valve: Anyone successfully replace it without pulling the dash?

So, Ive got a 1G that is going to need a new thermal expansion valve. I know exactly where it is located, Im just trying to find out if anyone has been able to get it out without pulling the dash and the entire hvac assemblies out. Ive done some serious searching throughout the net and so far, if anyone has done it on a 1G, they've never talked about it.

I think (not positive) you should be able to get to it by just taking the blower motor box and assembly out.

Gotta pull the dash. There are a few bolts ontop of the assembly that can only be had with the dash out.

I figured that. I was able to pull the bottom portion of the box apart and can see the valve, but I couldn't imagine getting the thing off without pulling the entire box. Funny thing is, I had the dash out a long time ago when I was putting the car together and I replaced all the orings, receiver dryer and compressor and was unaware of the existence of the valve at the time. Looks like Ill be pulling the dash this weekend. Thank God for power tools...
