I checked similar threads but nothing sounded like this problem.

Well to start off I just picked up a 1992 plymouth laser on saturday. non turbo, 5 speed.
Car drove and ran fine until this morning.

warmed up the car before work, pulled out of my driveway in reverse just fine, put car into 1st just fine, shift to second and it kind of popped into gear harder than normal and the shifter felt VERY loose compared to normal. Now its stuck in second but the clutch seems to have plenty of pressure. when in second and driving I can push the shifter all the way forward like it is in 1st gear but it will not go in, and it feels very free, lots of play.

Also cant move the shifter to the right to go up into 3rd, shifter only goes forward and back but stays in 2nd.

Any ideas?

Have someone sit in the car while it's not running and move the shifter, if the 1-2 shifter cable moves the lever it connects to on the trans freely, then there's a good chance it's a fork, if none of the cables move on your trans when they try to go from 2nd to 1st, then the cable is more than likely binding/broken.
