the typical problem people have is when they go to turn on there cars all they hear is the click....

mine will click in the cab and i can hear my furl pump kick on but............it wont turn the starter

IF i hold the key to the start postion for like a mintue straight it'll usually engage and the car will start.
it'll do it when warm or cold, and sometimes not at all. (starter is new)

thanks guys

The solonoid is working. Sound's like the motor is not engaging..Can you take it off and take to your local auto parts dealer and have them check it? If the motor is shot, you can just buy a new one right there, or go to the dealership..

While your under your hood make sure your battery is good, and all of the wires running to the starter are good and tight...

It's only held on by two bolts. When you remove the battery and battery mount, you can get to it fairly easy. There's a couple connections to loosen and that's it. Once, the auto store tests it, you'll know for sure. You can buy a re-manufactured Mitsubishi starter right then and there.

It could also possibly be the ignition switch (when you turn the key) that is faulty. Check it out with a multi-meter to verfiy that it closes when the key is turned to the start position. Do you have a turbo timer that might be interfering with the proper operation of the ignition switch?

Like others have suggested, it could be the starter solenoid. I know you said the starter is new, but it's still possible. I wouldn't rule it out completely.

A weak battery is another possibility. But the fact that you can hold the key in the start position for a minute causes the car to start suggests that the battery is somewhat ok. Otherwise, a weak battery wouldn't start the car no matter how long you held the key. Try charging or jumping your battery when you go to start the car and see if it helps or not.

Corrosion on the battery terminals, a loose battery lug/clamp or broken or frayed wires could also prevent the car from starting. Clean the battery posts and connectors and make sure they're electrically and mechanicall (ie. tight) sound.

well i did what bud said and took it in(your pm bud helped alot only took me maybe a few mintues to remove), they said my starter was bad..i bought a new once since performance wouldn't exchange it bc i didn't have receipt.( bought this one at autozone were it was tested)

1st try ............LOL after installing it starter just did the same damn thing...(new one)

2nd try....i recently put a t.r.e. trans in and thought maybe i had ground on wrong bolt..i switched the cable to a different bolt and it fires right up. To make things even more screwed up autozone wont take back the new starter bc i installed it HA....

so did i just eat 200 plus dollars over something stupid?....would having the cable on a different bolt matter?....anyone recall if the cable is suppose to be on the starter bolt or the top tranny to motor bolt?

The ground goes between the bellhousing and the bolt that goes through to the starter to support it. Why wont they return it. Thats some BS. I would take it to a different autozone and dont say why you are returning it and make sure it looks CLEAN!

techically the starter that was in my car (1 week old) was good they said it was bad...so i bought a new one and it turns out my ground was wrong not the starter.I had to give them my first starter as a core when i bought a new one. I talked to there district manager today and he said i could return it .LOL the guys at autozone said all the cores had been shipped out and i couldn't get my starter back...basically i got raped on this one..but i learned i'll do busniess elsewhere now.

I had the same issue recently. My mitsu starter went out on the car. I searched high and low for an OEM mitsu starter but ended up going with a Napa reman'd. Put it in... cranked but... still seemed to have issues. Over the course of a week it got worse and worse until the car would only intermittently and weakly crank. So at this point I thought it had to be something ELSE. I went through all the wiring, grounds, fuses etc over the course of a week. Finally I said screw it, it HAS to be the reman'd starter. And guess what? It was. I took the starter back to Napa, got a replacement and now it cranks strong every time. Just because you just got it... doesn't mean it can't be the problem. Never rule out even a "new" reman'd starter.
