1g shifting question need assistance

well i have a n/t automatic 97 talon and i bought a 94 eclipse gs-t stick shift. well i have to learn how to drive stick and i was drivin my freinds stick tracker great and smooth i thought i was ready but... hears the problem.- i get into the eclipse and bam for some reason no matter what i do i cant get it to start off smoothly. that is from a dead stop. the car will jerk and jerk no matter what like the engine is bout to jump out and even my gramps says i had a good shift its stil rough. do the 1st gens have a hardshiftin problem can anyone give me some tips or anything thanx -shawn

You just need to adapt to each car. As you get more experienced driving stick, it shouldn't take you long at all to get used to different cars. Different cars will have different clutch pressures, engagement points, "grabbiness", and that's probably what's tripping you up. Not to mention some older cars bog easier when too much load is put on the engine (things get dirty and out of tune with age) without you giving them enough gas. You'll notice most new cars are very easy to drive and forgive bad shifting.

Speaking of the clutch. You may want to ask someone more experienced to see where it feels like the clutch is engaging. It maybe that it needs adjusting or it could be on its way out. If all seems well after that just remember practice makes perfect.

I work at a detail shop, and have driven almost every car on the market (from stick SUVs to brand new bimmers and S2Ks)

I hardly ever stall anymore, what i do is rev to like 2000 and hold it while slowly pulling the clutch out. Basically, riding the clutch. Every car releases differently. What I would do in your situation is start the car and SLOWLY let the clutch out, without giving it any gas. Youll feel the car about to stall (it could move forward a little too, as you actually dont need to press the gas to get the car moving)

It takes time to learn, I taught myself when I bought my 93 in the dealer parking lot, and barely made it home

Try learning in California....man, all those hills = scary sh*t, I've never been so nerve wrecked in my life. I know I won't ever go back to automatic....less my knees give out, but that won't be for a long time.

My Car was originally my wifes( I took it over ), I didn't know how to drive a stick. I had to learn really quick when we went out and she got drunk, I about ripped the clutch out of the damn thing . about 3 months later I had to have a new clutch put in it .

yea also all cars have diff shift poitns etc.. so you just have to get used to it, like me ive never driven a stick dsm before so i know its gonna be sketchy my first two weeks or so after i get one.
