Picked up a '91 Talon TSi bout a week ago for $300. Doesnt run, turbo was gone. Almost every wire that was hooked up to te engine was disconnected and not labeled so Im having a hard time gettting it all back together. This is my first DSM and the first that Ive worked on. Two main wiring problems are on teh throttle body and oil sensor wires. Now with the throttle body when I picked it up there was a sensor that was just zip-tied out of the way. Ive come to find that its the TPS, but the place its supposed to go to theres anothere sensor there. I cant find anything to tell me what it is.

Then theres the other side of the throttle body. Theres a wire that I cant find a place for that looks just like the idle switch wire.

Under all that coming from the harness is another plug I cant find a plug in for. Its purple at the end, kinda looks like the MAS plug.

Now moving to the lower part of the engine, after some research I found that the three extra wires from the alternator harness (if you will) go to the power steering pump, oil pressure sensor, and oil light gauge. Only problem is I dont know where the two oil sensor wires go.

And lastly from the harness that goes to the thermostat housing I have one plug left without any place to go.

Well those are my little problems, any help is very much appreciated. If someone could provide pictures, that would be great to, Im better with seeing than hearing.

As for lifting the whole thing out, I thought about that, but I didnt like the idea of having to disconnect everything from the tranny. And I at least know people take the engine out w/o the tranny so Im going to go that route.

You drop the Motor / Tranny Assembly DOWN not up - As far as "disconnecting" have you looked at your CV Boots? - Do you know how old the Clutch is? - How old the Struts are? - How about the Brakes? - You'll be in EVERY one of those areas you are worried about "disconnecting" before your done - Tryin to go up with that Motor with Tranny in place you'll disconnect all kinda stuff in the Engine Bay AND Tranny trying to find clearance to clear the Tranny - You'll regret it.

Well then my question now is, if I do drop the whole thing out the bottom, as you said would be the best thing to do, it doesnt sound like I'll have a rolling chassis to work with. I wouldnt mind havng to leave it on the lift and not have to push the car everyday, but my teacher gets on my case about not moving it, mainly because they need to park school vehicles in the shop because of the snow. I could just tell him to shove it if I have to leave it on the lift since one of my classmates already swapped a new motor into his car that he had on the lift for a month or two. I'll have to look up how to drop it from the bottom, like what I have to take out.

And thanks acexxxoasis for the offer, but I had actually already ordered one, infact they just delivered it.

Certainly do what you gotta do & indeed noone should take advantage of ANY lift for a Month or 2 like the other guy did - But that puppy will be back on lift a few times...

Got back to work on this again. Managed to get the axles out, man that was a pain. They wouldnt break looses from the hub so we hd to pull the whole steering knuckle out which also didnt want to come out at first. I may be needing new hubs and axles , the driver side asle was missing a boot and looks to be missing one its 3 bearing balls (?). So Im hoping to be ready to pull it on Wednesday, with disconnecting everything else on Monday.

Finally got the motor yanked out. That thing was like the opposite of easy to get out. Then again it was my first engine pull and I was doing it by myself. I shouldve had two more people with the crap I had to do to get it out. Well the tear down will begin shortly. I'll have some pics tommarrow of it out.
Ready to pull..

Not that it matters, but in order to use a NT throttle body in a turbo car the TB has to be machined to accept the turbo shaft seals.

Got some pics of the engine removed.

I only have a week left of this class so I have to work on getting the suspension back in and getting it over to my house (only couple blocks away). Also bought myself an engine stand tonight.

Now I just need to figure out a way to haul it to my house. Would it be alright just to lift into the back of a truck and setit in there for the 2 block ride to my house? Or do I need to make some kind of stand for it to sit in the bed?

You will be fine hauling it in the back of your truck. I usually have an old tire handy to sit it on and a few ratchet straps so the engine doesn't move around.

Well I got it home. Just had to put it on a tire.
Its now mounted on a stand I've begun the disassembly. This takes quite a while when you have to take breaks to label everything. And man has it been cold out latley, -10's!

LOL, i hear ya on the negative temperatures. Wisconsin sucks right now. Rebuild looks like it's coming along good. With that motor out, steam cleaning the engine bay wouldnt be a bad idea. But good luck man :thumb:

Yea I will deffinetly be cleaing the engine bay. No worrys haha.

I got the head off last night, but now I cant for the life of me get the crank sprocket nut off. I tried everything, impact gun, hitting it with a block of wood and hammer, then reaming on it, but it wont budge! Im going to try soaking it with WD-40 or something like that, then go at it again, but otherwise I dont know what to do.

Well Im done with my auto class for the year, so I had to bring the car home. My mom loves the non-running car sitting on the side of the house.... well not really, but oh well.
The engine is now stripped down to just the bare block. Time to start cleaning and measuring/ inspecting to see what I'll need done at the machine shop.
Also has anyone noticed a really nasty wierd smell after they take the bolts out of th connecting rods and crank caps? I just thought it was the wierdest thing haha.
