I just replaced both the axles in my N/T last night. Some oil leaked out in the process and I went to get some today to replace it. The manual calls for 10W 40, but this doesn't sound right to me. Is it normal to put motor oil in a M/T N/T? I've already been driving it around a bit with the oil in there should I be concerned?

Fluid type: API GL-5 SAE 75W-85W gear lube. My haynes also says some thing about 10W-40 but the Mitsubishi Manual only says gear lube.

Edit: Just read more in my haynes manual it is saying viscosity should be 10w-40. Not sure how 75W-85W gear lube is rated for viscosity.

When I pulled the transmission out of the car pictured in my avitar it had motor oil in it. I replaced it with 75w-85w when I put it back in.

So then technically running 10w 40 motor oil in the transmission would be fine, but it's better to run gear oil? Should I switch over do you think? The car only has 72k miles on it and I doubt the transmission fluid has ever been changed.

Me personaly I would rather run gear oil it is thicker and will keep things lubed better. At least thats my opinion.

The service interval for gear lube is 30,000 miles just so you know.

Thanks for the help. Will I be okay driving it with the quart of 10w 40 motor oil while waiting for the shipment of Red Line to come in?

DO NOT USE MOTOR OIL IN A DSM TRANNY! Use synchromesh if you want a good dependable cheap fluid. I personally use royal purple 75-90 in mine, it's a little thicker but it protects better than synchromesh

I use Redline MT-90. Why you don't use motor oil in the tranny is the oil will not adhere to the gears as does the right tranny fluid under pressure.

Old 1st generation Honda Civics allowed 10w40 motor oil in their trannies, but shoot, those were lawnmower transmissions.

I use a combo of snycromesh and 15w-40 tractor transmission oil, works great shifts smooth, best part i don't have to search for reverse, goes in first time! After further research im going to go with Redline lightweight shockproof, it's a little on the heavy side but Shep has recommended in drag applications as it adheres to the gears much better when the tranny gets warm.

I used Redline MT-90 for my tranny and my shifts are like silk:rocks:. I used Redline Shockproof in the Transfer case and the front and rear diff's and although no noticable improvements like the tranny, I know this stuff is doing a good job. The stuff is like syrup until it gets to temperature, so beware if you try pouring this stuff in cold..it'll take for everROFL
