I bought my logger and cable off ebay(over a year ago) so the cable going to the diagnostic port is really cheap. Since the wires are so cheap and small i accidentally ripped them from the cable. So, anyone else that has a 1G cable of ebay could help me out here. I'm not sure which colors are suppose to jump. I have a red, black, green, and yellow wire. If anyone could show me a picture or just tell me what wires combine, that would be great.

Posting a detailed picture of your cable might help us out.
I assume you have the "powered" cable, since you listed four wire colors. I'm having some issues with one of my cables as well, so if you post a pic, I might be able to help out a little, since I have mine taken apart at the moment, as well.

here is a picture. Its the serial port on one end with the 4 wires on the other end. I attached to 2 clips to the black and the red wire because I assumed they were not the ones that were jumped.

Left to right, black, red, green, yellow
So I'm not sure if i can just twist the yellow and green wire together and put a connector on them? Its been a while since i hooked it up so i dont really even remember if there are suppose to be 3 or 4 plug in clips.

Hmm, that looks a little strange. On a standard Auto-On cable, there are three wires, usually all the same length. One goes to pin 1 on the diagnostic port, and the other two to pins 10 & 12 (interchangeable). On the other hand, there is another type of logger cable that is a "Powered" cable. it follows the same general setup guidelines, but there is one loger wire with a male connector that plugs into an unused Battery fuse in your fuse panel (I use the top port on fuse #2, myself. Others use #8).

Yours seems to have two long male(?) connectors and two that don't have any connectors at all............WTF

I might try to just splice the green and yellow wires together like you said, to make a standard Auto-On cable, but I'm really not sure.

Is this how you got the cable from the seller? Yuck. Might try to contact the person who made it and ask wtf you're supposed to do with the piece of crap cable he sent you. LOL.

They are differnt lenghts because I cut them...the cable looked perfectly normal when i got it and worked fine when i got it. But after leaving it hooked up for so long it evetually got stepped on and all 4 wires were ripped off. I just added the 2 prongs/plugins on the 2 longer ones because i assumed the black and red would not be jumped. Like i said, If any else BOUGHT the cheap 70-80$ or whatever complete pocket logger off of EBAY(palm m100 and MMCD software include) they should have the same cable as me.

femme-thanks for the replies so far, and sorry about any confusion.

Ahhhh, I see :coy: My reading comprehension sucks today, apparently. It about 400 degrees below 0 here (or so it seems), so I'm running back and forth from working on the car, trying to keep warm......I guess the cold has temporarily disabled some brain cells. LOL.

Sorry about the confusion. Like I said, maybe try splicing those two wires together like you mentioned...I hope you get it sorted out, and if you have any further questions, I promise I will actually *read the entire question* before helping you :thumb:

Well hopefully someone bought their cable/logger of ebay besides me.:(

Unfortunately I am not going to be much help. I just checked the info on mine and I have 2 white wires (pins 10 and 12) and one blue wire (pin 1).

I wouldn't put those 2 together. One will run to the fuse (I assume) and the other 3 will go to the dignostic post.

If you still have the sellers info it might be worth an email.

I'm trying to fix mine, as stated above.

My bad, chief. Haven't slept much lately and probably not interpreting a damn thing right... wish I could help, but I'm still waiting on mine.

Poor guy...Everyone is misunderstanding his posts today. LOL.

Have you gotten it figured out yet DSMcamaro?
Let me know if I can be of any more help. :)

You know, I just remembered this...I actually talked to the guy that makes those cables not long ago....So at the very least, I can offer a link to another ebay auction that he has going right now...Maybe you can contact him if indeed this is the same guy:
Link To Ebay Auction

I know he doesn't make powered cables, so at the very least we can assume that those "4" wires that you have need to become "3" wires in one way or another. LOL.

So i finally found the insturctions that came with the logger, and the picture only shows 3 wires and talks about white and blue wires. funny thing, non of my wires are blue or white. anyways, I'll attach this pic of the instructions. I looks like I kinda need to jump 2 wires and then just connect the other 2 on to 1 prong.

femme, your right, the 4 need to become 3, but that e-bay link you have listed doesn't look like its the same guy I bought my cable from. (I had a friend buy the cable for me so I can't really go back and check real easily who the seller was.)

Could we maybe assume that the maker of the cable used common sense and made the "RED" wire the Power wire, and the "BLACK" wire the Ground?

If this is the case, that would mean that the Black wire plugs into Pin 12, the red into Pin 10, leaving the "hybrid" (Green+Yellow) wire to be the data wire......Which would make your assumption that these wires should be spliced together correct.

Then again...Common sense is pretty lacking these days, but that theory does seem plausable to me......

But 10 and 12 are Y'ed.... so that wouldnt make to much sense.
yea, I really didn't think this would be that difficult. Oh well, weather here in Wisconsin really sucks right now anyways, so i'm not in any real big hurry or anything. I just need the right person to look at this thread and help me out a bit. I figured a lot of people on here would purchased the same thing....but i guess not.

The problem with eBay cables is that unless you talking about the same seller, the cables are all different in implementation. How one guy decided to solder the wire has little relationship to how the next guy does.

To help you fix this cable we need good clear pictures of the DB9 connector with the cover off so we can see where those 4 wires are going.

I just got back to my appartment tonight(college) and the cable is at my parents house, so I wouldnt be able to look for probably another 2 weeks. But like I said earlier, im not in any real big hurry anyways.

Update, I figured it out. It just so happens that I don't need the Green or yellow wire at all and all i needed to do was jump the *edit* red one. Thanks to everyone for their help.

Sounds like somebody used telephone wire with a passive interface and chose red for the data and black for the ground and to pull pin 10 low.

I was going to say before that it's almost easier to make a new one than debug a unknown one. Glad you got it working.

Steve

Just incase anyone was to ever use this as a reference, I should state that I jumped the red wire, not the black one, as previously stated above. That is all.
