Ok ive been searching for about an hour now and found tons of info on data loggers and the software but zip when it comes to where I acquire a cable. So how and where do I find a cable that will connect from my cars diagnostic port to my laptop? That is without having to buy some software. I plan on using tunerstein.

You can make your own cable (there is a tech write up about it somewhere) or you can buy one. I have always bought them off of ebay. There is a guy who sells really nice cables for about $30, but they are quality and guaranteed forever. They are also set up so you can leave the cable hooked up all the time (the "auto-on" feature). It also has the wiring harness, and the homemade ones have three individual wires you have to hook up. The cheaper ones on Ebay are usually just homemade ones. I recommend you go for the good cable, you wont be disappointed!

Make sure you specify that it's for a '90. Some of the auto-on cables won't work with a '90, due to the differences in the electrical systems, and people have had problems in the past. Just email/contact the seller, and confirm that their product will work on a '90, and if not, if they have one that will.

Kinda kicking myself for not hanging onto the URL for the guy who sold me mine. Here's a site though... I own one that looks like their '1G Standard ALDL Cable'. $45 there.

would you be able to use the aldl connector from a snap on scanner and get a connecter to match it with a palm sync cable to make it work for datalogging

You could wire it directly together if you had a serial hot sync cable. I don't know what you mean by "snap on scanner" though.

I bought a cable on ebay made for the snap on mt 2500 scanner. It had a connector for the 1G and the end to connect to the OBD II . I got it for like $8.00 and cut the end off for the 1G and wired it up to a cable.
As a side note I changed over to pocketlogger and I have the old cable I made. If you are interested in it pm me
