I'm kinda new to this whole exhaust pipe, muffler scene... Actually, Im a computer geek that just bought a 91 Eclipse GSX. Not sure what to buy to make my car sound... how do i say this... ummm... meaner? :p I do not want a "Crazy Loud American Muscle Car That Sounds Like Its Going To Eat You" type of loud. I want something loud enough... Just a bit more ROAR. Suggestions? Do I have to change the whole exhaust system? Just the muffler tip?

Also, the current BOV sounds alright, but what if I want it to sound maybe louder, or a bit different... Suggestions? I do not plan on upgrading turbo, or adding ALOT of horsepower. Basically, speed is not the main thing for me, its reliability. If tweaking the BOV will affect my car's reiability then I will not change it at all. But if there's a way to change the sound my BOV makes without affecting reliability or performance, please let me know.:dsm:

the apexi n1 he is talking about is just a muffler where as the hks is a full exhaust.
i have a 3'' turbo back VRS exhaust w/test pipe and i always get complimants on how mean it sounds even at idle.alot of exhausts sound high pitched or tinny but this is real low andloud but not throaty like a muscle car or to to loud.
here is a link of there website/sound clip. (sounds alittle better in real life though)

But that is the whole exhaust system right? I'm just checking because it is not in the top priority list right now. Not sure if you've seen my other thread, but I'm doing a tune-up to my car. But eventually I'd like to make it sound louder.

You can usually find Greddy Type-S bovs for around $100-$130. They recirculate just like stock, but they are a lot louder than stock.

Like CrimsonDragon said, if you change the intake pipe (the pipe connecting your air filter to the inlet of your turbo) to an aluminum pipe, you will definitely hear the turbo spool up better. I have an Evo3 16g, and when I first put the pipe on, it almost sounded like a plane taking off when I hit full boost LOL.. and I only got the pipe for $30. You could probably find similar deals.

You could get a muffler from somewhere, if you want a cheap but OK sound, try a cherry bomb. remove the cat and put in a test pipe. Also, you could probably get all your own piping for an exhaust system, and then have a shop just bend it and install it for you, and you would have a full exhaust. Just a tip when dealing with muffler shops, they legally wont remove the catalytic converter because of emission laws and such, but if there is no catalytic converter present when you bring in your car, there is no law saying they HAVE to put a cat in or they CANT work on your car because of that.

Those are the main (and probably cheapest) things to get a better sound. You could then start changing your intercooler pipes to metal, bigger (and louder) turbos, build head with lopey cams, etc.

I'll probably go with a muffler tip for now. Maybe the cherry bomb. Any other suggestions as far as muffler tips? I do not have much cash right now.

personally I wouldnt even bother with a tip now, if you plan on getting an actual muffler in the future. If you still have your full stock exhaust system, cut off your stock muffler and go with that for a while LOL. It'll be loud and sound a little better, won't be too bad though because you still have your cat.

I will probably eventually change the whole exhaust system, but I do not see that comming anywhere in the near future. So for now, for a bit more roar, a muffler tip right? Any recommendations?

just go to Autozone, Discount Auto, Pep Boys, etc, and look at what they have. Personally... I don't think a tip would give you much sound difference? or at least not the sound difference you want.

I personally suggest against just getting a muffler so your car will be louder, that's what gives imports such a bad reputation. But if that's what you want to do, I'm not going to tell you not to do it. And eBay would be a good place to get mufflers, they have more than you could imagine. Good luck with your mods in the future.

A nice big chrome tip is just bling, if thats what your looking for. I would suggest taking a stroll around ebay, they have some really cheap cat-backs that are mandrel bent and have decent welds for under $300.

Uh, if you don't have the cash, then don't waste your money. Mod once. Save your money and slowly work your way up the upgrade path. Don't bother putting on some ricey muffler just for noise. And if you said it needs a tune up, then take what little cash you have work on that. I can guarantee that the majority of the members on the site will echo that. We're a performance based forum, and asking for advice in 'flash and sound' mods won't get you much help.

If all you want is more noise and don't want to spend anything (as it seems to me since you only want to buy a tip), just hack your muffler off. All it costs is a blade for your sawzall and your making noise. Then if your still worried about that shiny exhaust tip you want, get a short piece of strait pipe and mount your tip. Otherwise save your money and do it right once. Just my opinion.

I'll probably just forget about the muffler for now. Focus on getting it running nicely, and reliably, then fix the other small details when I have more extra cash. I'll probably repost when I'm ready to actually buy an upgrade to get some feedback. Thanks for your help guys!

i have an old exhaust with a hole in it its really loud i will give you a good deal.its big 2 inch exhaust and the hole really lets it sing:beatentodeath:

i run a apexi gt spec downpipe,no cat,3'' thermal r&d catback. and that is very thoarty and mean like a dsm should sound. no high pitch or raspy. i wanted it to be louder so i put a atmospehic o2 dump. cant get louder than that. as to a bov. i had a greddy type s but it was loud and sounded nice but had to many idle problems with it. when with a hks ssqv. sounds excellent. my honest truth if you want loud a 3'' turbo back will solve your need. external o2 dump are everyone's own choice. i love mine.:thumb:

Even on boost I can barely hear my o2 dump. Maybe I gotta port the wastegate passage on it, because it's just a circle instead of the bell shape on my turbo exhaust housing. Makes sense right? Uneven gas flow..

OK Oblivion sounds like you are on real low budget for this particular mod; you have no money to spend on it right now I think you said...

So just get a cutting torch or a hacksaw or something and just remove your catalytic converter, and do not even insert a test pipe. Leave everything else the same, it will be loud as heck, but the stock muffler is still in place. Only thing is the pipe is only running from the manifold out the downpipe. You be runnin just a straight downpipe!

Very loud for free! It will sound badass harsh damn near like a muscle car though, got to warn ya. And whenever there is a cop around take it real easy so as not to get a ticket for being too loud.:rocks:
