Ok I was driven last night and the car started to studder and act like it was going to die...I shut it down...I tried to turn it over and nothing...I put a new battery in today and it still won't work...any suggs? My alternator was sparking last night as well...let me know thanks!

Solution
Ok, I think I found out why my car won't start. Starter cable came loose due to the fact my tranny bolts are loose/missing. I went to the junk yard and got some, bolted one on and it helped. Still jerking though, I think my clutch or flywheel is loose and cause that jerking. Going to tackle it this weekend, I will keep everyone posted! :ohdamn:
Check all your grounding wires (one on the battery, firewall and the starter) clean any corrosion. Also check to make sure all of your wires are tight on your alternator, could be the cause of it sparking. You could also have your alternator bench tested. But if you did just put in a new battery it should have enough power to turn your car over. Even if the alternator was bad. And check fuses

I had a similar problem years ago,the power cable worked itself loose and grounded to the motor,i had to replace the cable, underhood 80amp fuse and i had also found my coil ignitor not properly ground to the intake manifold.Sounds like a simple but time consuming fix.Good luck.

Hi, dont mean to thread jack but Im having the same problem like you. I just came home from driving and I ried to start my car but it was struggling, then I turned it off, tried to star it but it wont. I just change my starter, battery, and plugs. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I checked my fuses on the pos batt cable and they all were good and it was grounded on the battery...havent had a chance to see the starter...I hope its nothing major...i checked my timing belt and it was ok... and no car will not ever try to turn over with brand new battery

Is there a clicking noise when you try and start it? I think Pepboys tests starters and alternators for free. Or, if you have a couple good friends try push starting the car.

ok I turned it by hand...one of the bolts on the starter was loose...got it started and now it shakes like crazy...also found some black material under the car that looks like oily fiberglass....i dunno but the car stays around 2k rpm and doesnt smoke or anything...but when its on the wheels spin and the car jerks..

Check all 4 of your motor mounts, when was your last tune up? Also might want to take a look at your spark plug wires.

How do I check the ecu?? Also I just put 4 new prothane mounts in and I put new spark plugs in less then 2 months ago....

89-94 Capacitor Replacement

That's a link that will give you a little info on the capcitor check, the older ecu's were known for leaking.

I dont' know what would be causing the shaking of your engine?? Are all cylinders firing? A simple test would be to go through while the engine is running and 1 at a time pull off each cylinders plug wire. Do this one at a time and replace it back on before you go to the next. You are looking to make sure each time you pull one off the engine runs worse. If you pull one off and it makes no difference in how the engine is running then that's probably where your problem is coming from.

If you take your tranny off to check the clutch make sure to locktite the clutch-flywheel bolts and flywheel-crank bolts.
