okay, i have been reading a lot about dsmers and burning oil. I am looking to buy a 1996 eagle talon turbo fwd for 1000obo. the guy says it burns a quart of oil fast (like in a two hour drive) the motor doesnt knock, and head was rebuilt 2 years ago. whats the best and worse outcome i can be getting myself into?

Well the worse pull the thing apart and rebuild the engine, less than a grand for parts, stock that is. Depends or pass and find something that doesnt burn oil that much, if you want the car get it, and make it a project car, thats my take i like projects, is it a dd, project car, project cars are just that projects.

Might have bad turbo seals... might need new piston rings... might need new valve seals... might need new pistons... I'd say do a compression test and a leakdown test. But, worst case I'm thinking a new engine or a rebuild on the one in there.

definitely not worth $1k. offer 500 at most. more than likely needs new rings. thats pretty much a full engine rebuild if the pistons are ok. i'd say that's your best bet. worst case, the pistons might be cracked, depends how it's currently running. ie. if it was running lean or rich. i just went through this with mine :'(

i am just needing the motor for a roller i have. i have a rebuilt head and a new t25 turbo but if its the rings i would be putting more time in the car then wanted.

"runs just fine" from the seller

A quart in a couple hours is a lot of oil getting burned. My 4g64 is in dire need of new rings (smokes like a chimney at startup) and I only burn a quart every 2-3 weeks. And that's driving over 60 miles daily.

But the best thing to do is run a compression test on the engine. If it comes up with a dead cylinder or lower than normal compression, then you'll know where it's coming from. But I highly doubt a bad turbo or valve stem seals could cause that much oil consumption. It's most likely internal.

course he's gonna tell you it runs fine. trust me, i just got f***** over by someone just like him when it had blown a ring and then cracked two pistons, and he used jb weld on the oil pump and f***** that up too. im paying for it now LOL

Pull the plugs out and look at them. It the rings are bad enough to burn that much oil they will be covered in oil. Also check the lower intercooler pipe for oil to see if it is coming from the compressor side of the turbo. IF the plugs are clean and the intercooler pipe is clean than it would be leaking thru the turbine seal, or just leaking from the engine.

there's no point, even if all the turbo seals were leaking, there's no way it would be burning that much oil.

I had an accidental blocked valve cover to intake pipe hose and burnt a quart of oil in a 5 mile round trip test run. There was so much oil coming from the turbine side that oil was coming out the muffler. I bought an intake pipe used from a guy and didn't realize that he had epoxied the hole shut, LOL.

If the motor has a clogged oil return it could easily be blowing oil strait into the exhaust or LICP. as stated, pull the LICP and see if there is oil all over. Hell with a leak like that you could probably pull the intake tube and see oil in the compressor housing. It would likely be all over the intake pipe too if the BOV is recirculated. It honestly doesnt sound like its worth it tho. It sounds like you should find yourself another engine or buy that one planning to rebuild it.
