Well driving home tonight I was getting 17volts from the alternator. My highbeams went out and so did my left headlight and my temp gauge goes up to the p in temp when I am crusing. If I idle I get 14.0. I am assuming that the regulator in the alternator went out and is just letting it put out as much power as it can?

17 volts isn't that bad if you are checking at the alternator posts, its supposed to be high, its charging the battery. it wouldn't cause your car to run hot though. you could always pull the alternator and take it somewhere to be checked, most places will do that for free.

17 is TERRIBLE. It should be 14.4ish

Your voltage regulator is toast, you need a new alternator.

I put a new alternator in last night for the fourth time this year LOL. No my car wasn't over heating it just made my gauge go up higher than normal because it was running 18 volts it has stayed right on E in temp like normal ever since I put the new alt. in.

17 volts doesn't seem bad to me, but i've never had it that high on a car. i work on bikes a lot and most of them run around 16 volts, maybe thats why it doesn't seem too high to me. LOL sorry for the mistake!
