17 degrees base timing when timing when connector ungrounded

I can set base timing to 5 degrees BTDC with the timing connector grounded, but if I unground the connector to leave timing mode it advances to 17 degrees BDTC. I can see this with the timing light or MMCD.

What could be causing this?

Just took a look at the RT Tuner Pro map as provided by the previous owner. It is set to 17 degrees at 750 rpm and 18 degrees at 800 rpm.

The ecm is taking over and doing its job. No problem exists.
